There was a girl in high school who dropped her books right in front of me a couple of times a week.

We were a couple for almost two years after I figured out what she was up to.

Hmmmm!  Haven't thought about her in ages.  I wonder....?

Gads.

<Has to laugh>

They grow up, have kids and careers, but there's still that bit of a boy in each of them.

Someone said once "you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy".  I'm living proof.  I am also a dirty old man, so if you are not careful picking up your purse, I might be sneakin a peak.

but, shy does well for me....one time a lady said she didn't trust me and some one asked why, and she said "still waters runs deep" don't know if that was a compliment, what do ya think?

Forty Rod,

That water would not be still now would it?  But I think you got the right idea.

A lady of the times is walking down the boardwalk in town to do some shopping, when she drops her reticule. There are no gentlemen nearby to pick it up for her, just some ne'er do wells hanging out by the saloon across the road.

Well, we now know who those ne'er-do-wells are, don't we? :D

I think at this point, the lady would slowly nudge her reticule toward the wall with the point of her shoe, then, with her back to the wall, she'd carefully drop into a modified curtsey, retrieve her reticule and leave as gracefully and quickly as possible!

Scattered Thumbs

Is that a reticule in your pocket? Or are you just happy to see me?  ;D

<ST vanishes in the cyber air before you know what hits the head of you know who> ;D

Forty Rod

How 'bout taking her parasol by the pointy end and using the crook in the handle to snag the drawstrings on the reticule?

Be careful about dropping the parasol or you'll have to trry to pick up both of them when you do the handsprings over them from up the street ("up the street" because going downhill is easier.)

Joyce (AnnieLee)

Perhaps an easier retrieval would be for the lady to walk down the steps, then move down the street along the porch and simply reach across the porch to pick up the reticule. She'd still risk bending a little in front of the ne're-do-wells, but not as much.

There ya go, Annie ;) since I saw references to the big crazy town called D.C., I'm assuming you're in the Northern part of VA., correct? in connection to the "Project" I've got going with Del, I need to find an old town in the area between the James and Potomac in Lancaster Co.. It's referred to as Caroline, but can't find any reference maps old or new that show it. Ever heard of a Village/ town by that? I tried Lancaster Co Histerical Society, but never got an answer from them and have since lost a contact number or E-Mail ad for them...........Buck 8) ::) ??? :-\
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Joyce (AnnieLee)

I'll look into it, Buck and see what I can find out for you. In the meantime, here is some contact information:

Thanks, Annie. i'm thinking at some point, it may have gotten incorporated into a larger municipality around there somewheres. My GGF was born there. Family history is really sparse due to non-keeping of records and the Western Expansion-moving around thing. Del's managed to find locations for Some of GP's early history for me, but GGF is gonna be much harder as he died when GP was 7 and wasn't with him at the time...............Buck 8) ::) ??? :-\

Still looking, though I drive down that way frequently, there is some info available on the 'net...

Lancaster County is located between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers. The James is farther south.

There is also a Caroline County that farther north:

Are you certain it was in Lancaster County? If so, I can go digging for info there.

RIO DEL RIO

I had the honor of portraying a "Southern Belle" in a Pageant in Washinton D.C. for a while.  I had to learn how to act "the proper Southern lady" at all times.  Navigating numerous obstacles in a hooped skirt wasn't easy, but when I got the "hang" of it, it was a great experience.  We carried a reticule which was looped around our wrists and almost impossible to remove, much less drop, and always a fan, which was continuously being jostled out of our hands.  We learned to stoop with our knees together and pointed slightly to the right, keeping our backs straight.  Surprisingly, this was easy to do and worked fine when we wore "walking dresses" which were very slim cut.   Regards,  MISS SCARLETT
