St. George has pointed out that men nearly always wore hats until the Kennedy Administration.

True.

Short quiz: can anyone tell me why?  (I know the answer, do you?)

El Peludo

'Casuse up until then, all of the Presidents had worn hats; John Kennedy didn't.  I don't know if this is really the reason, but it seems most logical to me.

He is one of the moderators of this site and also a good friend of Delmonico's.  Also if not the best historian on the acoutriments of common day to day life, he is definatly one of the best.

About hats...

I don't remember which number it was, but about that same time, the Vatican Council changed many of the rules for Catholics. One of the changes no longer required men to wear hats and women to wear veils in church. Is that what you are looking for?

AnnieLee, who remembers wearing a "doily" on her head.

I'd go along with that. As cars got smaller, my dad would have to try them on to see if he could fit in one. There was no way he'd be able to wear a hat in a standard car.

Don't need a full size pickup.  I drive my MGB with a cowboy hat, both top up, and topless.  Most don't believe you can keep your hat on it until they ride with me (topless).  Annie Lee shouldn't comment on this one (she has a strange fascination with anatomy).

If I remember right, Kennedy was the first President to not wear a hat to his inaguaration (sp?).
As for why, I don't know.  Seems that he did change the way that men looked at wearing a hat.

Adios,

Delmonico

He fergoyt it and there was no time to go back I heard.  Not sure just a rumor.

Russ nailed it.

Russ, you win an all expense paid canoe trip to Three Mile Island.

Take a look at the roof lines of Chevys (as an example) between '57 and '63...every year they got a bit lower.

My Dad, a lifelong hat wearer, complained about it whern we sold our '57 and bought a '60.   Since then I've read about it again several times.

Some of the new cars today are guarranteed to give you a stiff neck or a headache...or both.  They have zero headroom.
