Depriming live hulls

Howdy. I have some 20ga. Magtech hulls with buggered primers from the setup phase of my MEC 600jr. Do I need to do something to the primers to nullify them or can I safely deprime them and just expect a pop?

I also have some 44-40 shells that got crushed as well. TIA.

If the shell is primer only, the safe thing to do is pop em in a gun then decap em.

That said, I HAVE decapped live primers.  Since my press is in close proximity to powder, etc, I draped a heavy towel over the press and just go EASY and the primers come right out just like dead ones do.  I have even reused some of em ;)

I used to worry about decapping primers, now I just move the powder away from right next to the press, put on my safety glasses and decap them. Take it easy and they won't pop. If they do pop, well the only problem is an odd little pucker in the cloth of my chair.

Nothin like a supprise cap pop to remind ya your still alive and well ... :o
Like the others I have used my press to deprime live ones and reused them .

I used the depriming die (the one for Magtech hulls) on my MEC and they all came out without a pop. Something about taking my time and not forcing anything.
I learned that lesson a week ago. I was just throwing them onto the deprime station and jamming them down. Luckily I didn't break the pin off, but a couple of my hulls have double flash holes now. Guess thats one way to learn to slow down.

Buff,

Do you have one of the DE-loading tools that looks like a hammer?  (No - I'm not being funny - it's called a kinetic bullet puller.)

Our friend the bullet puller...much like an eraser on a pencil it will fix a stupid mistake. There are two kinds, a die that goes into the press and that hammer looking kinetic type. Well, actually there is a third type, a pair of side cutting pliers. The die is the safest and easiest to use, it doesn't happen often but every once in a great while you get a much louder noise than expected with the kinetics.
The real problem with them, though, is that if you have a lot of rounds and they happen to be crimped revolver rounds you will have one arm like Popeye when you are done. Since I cast my own bullets I often use the sidecutters. I put the round in the shellholder and run the ram up until the bullet sticks out of the hole the die should go in, grap it with the pliers and lower the ram. The pliers can't go down the hole so the bullet comes out, it goes into the pot and the lube acts as flux.
Of course it's best not to have bunches of bullets to pull.

The hammer type - eraser - good comparison.

Buff, if you have loaded lead bullets in those upside-down primers"Wrong Way"- Corrigan rounds, using a kinetic bullet puller will deform them, unless you stuff a 1/2" to 3/4" plug of dense, closed-cell foam in the bottom of it - where the bullet slams when hit.  Well, the foam won't keep it from deforming, but it'll keep it to a minimum; the bullet will still be ok for plinking, CAS, etc.  A jacketed bullet shouldn't noticeably deform at all - unless it sports a lead tip of some sort.

I've de-primed a lot of shells and re-used almost all the primers again. so that shouldn't be a problem, depending on age.  (If they've been that way for years, trash 'em.)  The POWDER should be OK.  Also - speaking of powder - depending on how much compression you put on the powder when you seated the bullet, the BP will have at least partially solidified (close to the bullet) into a hard pellet.  Carefully dig it out with something like an icepick.  It'll be fine - just crumble it up and use it again.

Ride easy!

Use the Kinetic Hammer and give the casing an additional blow and the powder usually comes out like a Pyrodex pellet.
