Six foot by Six foot is a big target, but not at 1000 yards.

I posted this over on the SASS wire, but I might get more usable answers hereabouts.

I shot bad today at the Winnequah Long Range Black Powder Cartridge match. Didn't run out of ladder, bullets worked fine. Gun worked good. Just can't see as good as I have to in order to keep shooting long distance targets. So, I have to cut the distance down to size. I'm thinkn' of a scope for my Remington Rolling Block 45-70. Saw one today and I sure like bringing the targets up to the 166 yard size.

Anybody shoot this kind of distance and use a "period correct" scope? How's it work for you? Which is the right one to get?

I put an RHO on my Pedersoli Sharps. It made a completely different (Better) shooting gun out of it. The down side? The waiting period. If you're going to order a Shilo, order the scope first.

Hell-Er High Water

D.D.,

A 6' x 6' target (72" x 72") at 1000 yards would give you the same sight picture as a 7.2" x 7.2" target at 100 yards.

Now I am in the same eye (AGE) prediciment as you are but using an equivalent, closer target for practice will sometimes help to get the proper sight picture for the longer range target.

Just something that you might try.

I think it's my eyes that keep me from getting out and buying this type of gun...7.5" at a hundred yards is not very big,  I tired shooting 400 yards at a 4'x4' target last spring and without a spotter I had a miserable time.

You guys are making me cry. I've never been able to see much beyond my nose without glasses. A few years ago they put a dinner plate sized target out at 250 yards at the side match at a State Match. I could barely see it at that distance. As soon as I started squinting through the aperture of my Sharps the doggone thing completey dissapeared. I wasted about 5 shots until I just gave up. You can't hit what you can't see.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Well guys, you all know what Waddie Mitchell says, "An old man ain't aways smarter, but an old man is generally wise." ;)

For the "kids" who don't know who Waddie is, Google. ::)
