Talked to an Austrian gun smith the other day who is regularly converting Uberti 1860s to Richards Conversions. As part of the process he is reducing the bore from the factory dia of .451 to approx. .441 by a galvano process?!? Further reduction to say .430 does not seem to be possible. The smith pretends that he is doing this to abtain good to excellent accuracy with hollow based bullets.
Has any of the pards here heard such a thing and can confirm that it will work & really improve accuracy?
If it works indeed my rational being, a Belgian Colt Centennial having a factory barrel of only .441 dia can be converted to shoot .44 Colt (.429 dia) easily because by this galvano technique one could expect a new barrel dia of around .430.

Essentially - he's plating the bore (galvanizing), and building up the thickness of the interior diameter.

Interesting.

Depending upon the hardness of the plating, it 'could' work - for awhile - but I suspect it wouldn't hold up over time.

You may be better off buying a barrel liner and having that installed properly.

Vaya,
