Howdy!

I was doing some routine maintenance on my 1858 NMA Remington that I've done so much work on.  It's NOW a really nice gun, if I say so myself. (it's on the right.  ;))

Well, I was going to switch nipples and the durn nip BROKE in half on the threaded part!  :o  I attempted to remove it with an E-Z out.  Too hard - the thing laughed at me.  So, onto the drill press I go.  Well, due to the fact of the nipples being machined in at an angle, and me not having proper tools or hold downs (and perhaps not enough skill) I broke numerous drills and ended up having the drill point wander off into the threaded part of the cylinder wall.  And the remaining portion of the nipple STILL won't come out.  (By the way - in case you're wondering, yes - I DO remove them EACH time I shoot for cleaning and use a good thread lube to keep it from locking up.  I'm sure it was a defective part.)

Here's whut I need.  Do any of y'all who have converted yer Pietta Remingtons to cartridge guns have any C&B cylinders sittin' around collecting dust that ya might wanna part with?  I'm not made of money, but I'll do the best I can.  Shucks - I'd buy a Kirst or an R&D cylinder if I could afford it, but that's another dream for the future.

I certainly can still use mine as a five-shot cylinder, but I'd like to have a good one.  Or more.

Thanks.  (I'm gonna post this on the Darksider's site as well as the Gunsmith site, so bear with me.)

Capt. Augustus

Usually Cabelas has a cylinder for a reasonable amount.  I bought one for a 1858 that was at least 10 years old.

Capt.  ,   Wow that is really cool that a modern made cylinder fit your original like that.

Jeff,  I am checking with Andy at Fall creek to see if he has one laying around.

Thanks, Don.

Cpt. A, thanks for the nice comment.  I now have one less 1875.  I traded (plus $$) it to another Remington fan for a nearly new COLT 2nd Gen., 1st Model 1848 Dragoon.  We're BOTH happy.  I've been trying to come up with something I can insert into the bad chamber so I don't inadvertantly fill it with powder & ball.  The nipple end is obvious, but I'd like to fill the chamber.  'Course, it has to be a material that will: 1) stay in place during firing, 2) not be affected by heat, 3) still look obviously full after repeated firing grime is on it, and 4) withstand Ballistol/BreakFree/lube/etc.

why not just ram a round ball in the hole just below the cly / barrel clearance then it would look good all the timeyou could drill a 1/8" hole in middle of lead to remove it or 1/4 hole would  show that it is a dummy round at reloading table. at least it wood look good

Thanks, Red.  That'd sure fit the bill about a material that would work.

SHB....I have to ask a question.....looking at the photo of your Remy's I couldn't help but notice the two legs in the photo....are you by chance a musician? Are you a steel guitar player? If so,what type of axe do you have? Dusty.

Howdy, Avocado Kid!

Those legs are the tripod I mounted the camera on to take the picture.  I am (more correctly, WAS) a musician, but my axe was a sax or a clarinet.  I actually went to college to be a music teacher, but after doing some teaching, I found that I HATED to teach.  (Actually, I hated the little a..holes who didn't think music was anything more than a class to waste time in.)  So I ended up a Tank Commander and Squadron Master Gunner.  Guns make pretty cool tunes, too, IMHO.  And they generally do exactly what I make them do!  :D :D
