If you are looking for brass for an Armisport Spencer in 56-50 then I would stay with the Starline stuff.  They worked close with Taylors to make brass that would fit the Armisport made gun.  You are likely to have the least problems with it.

Hi Major,

Thanks for your post.

I'm only reacting to the number of threads that have been started related to loading issues with the Starline 56-50 Brass, and Lyman dies.  Just wondering if these other indicated sources of/for brass may work better when used with the Lyman dies for the Taylor Spencer 56-50.

Hell-Er High Water

Before Starline brass was available I formed 56-50 from 348 Winchester cases.

I still  have some of these cases and load them the same as the Starline cases.  The only change in the loading procedure is using a 348 shell holder rather than the 56-50/50-70 shell holder.

Note that I did modify my expander plug for loading all cases by machining a long taper on the nose so as to not get any expansion in the heavier web area of the cases.

They are a bit smaller in head diameter but load, shoot and function through my Taylor's Spencer carbine with no problems.

I have seen no difference in accuracy between these and Starline cases.

The Lodgewood Brass is turned not formed. High quality and consistant.

I and currently shooting cut down 50-70 cases. I picked up a few of the Lodgewood cases two weeks ago at a Skirmish to see if they would be an option for me, and I am impressed with the quality and dimensions of the cases. They will work just fine for an original. Remember, I do not shoot the Italian version Spencer, so cannot speak for that type. Lodgewood stocks 2 types of the turned brass, one for Originals/Romano and one for the Italians. You have to specify which.
