I got a little Rem .31 cal, and fired it just using #10 caps on new stainless nipples...the caps split in 2-3 places and flared out, causing them to come off the nipple...what causes this ?
Thanks

It is OK for the caps to come off the nipples as long as they don't get into the "works" or trapped between the cylinder & frame and cause a binding jam. On my full sized NMAs all but the last cap falls free under recoil and gets out of the way. The Remington caps are presplit and designed to cloverleaf after firing. Some nipple tops are flatter or larger in diameter and when the cap pops some of the blast is directed laterally or the hammer flares the cap out as it smacks it against the nipple. I have somne older Navy Arms and Italian caps that have a very thick wall. They do not flare out when fired. I have read but have no other evidence that some of the 1800s caps were made of pretty thin foils and pretty much blew apart when fired. Don't quote me on that one.

I've seen and handled some of those caps, makes me wonder whey they still don't make them like that.

Probably a manufacturing/product handling reason, IMHO.
