Dick; I shoot a chaparral 45-60. Do you see in the future of making a 300gr .458 Big Lube mould. This gun loves the 300gr bullets but I have to use a greese cookie to get enough lube down the barrel. Thanks Doc O

Howdy Doc O,

If yer gun can tolerate a bit more weight, I have a LEE Six cavity design for the 45-70 that weighs in at 390 grains.  It is a RNFP design for lever rifles.  You can see it on my web site by clicking the banner below.

A new 300 grain design could be made, but the development and setup  costs are more then I would want to handle on a single order basis.

Hope this helps.

Doc O,

You might try the RCBS 45-325-FN-U, a plain base, flat nose bullet.

I am using it in my Chaparral 45-75 NWMP carbine and a friend is using it in his 45-60 rifle.  At this point it seems to work well with both BP & smokeyless loads in both rifles.

It has two grease grooves and it carries a reasonable amount of lube.  In addition, it has a crimp groove in the correct location for proper overall cartridge length in both of these calibers.

This gives you another option that you might look into.

DD;
    The 390gr is a bit more than I'ld like but thanks for the reply.
HHW;
   I think I'll give the RCBS a try, see how that works. I have a 340gr LEE mould but the greese groves are a bit small and it does'nt shoot neerly as well as the 300gr bullet.Thanks for the suggestion.

Dock O,

These bullets are availble from Buffalo Arms in small quantities.

If you want, I could send you some samples, sized either 0.457" or 0.459",  lubed with either BP or smokeless lube.

I size mine 0.457" as they have been more accurate than the 0.459" bullets.

Let me know if you want some, what diameter, what lube and a mailing address.

Doc O: If you could round up 23 other folks who want that bullet you could custom order the mould from LEE. I would like one myself. I would even honcho the buy if you didn't wanna. I have 2 Big Lube(tm) custom order moulds of my own design in process right now, and 3 others of someone elses design I am waiting for.

HHW;  Thanks very much for the offer thats real nice of you. For now I see meister has a 300gr bullet with 2 crimp grooves, also had a little problem with OAL being a bit to long. I'll give them a try first, but will keep you in mind [dont want to put you out]. Thanks again Doc O

Springfeild Slim;
       I'm the only one in my area [east central Iowa] that I know of that has a 45- 60 or 45-75. Everyone else that has the long rang guns wouldn't want to go with that light of bullet weight. But hey I'll keep my ears open, you never know. Doc O

It would make a good Plainsman bullet for a 45-70, no need for a big bullet then. In a few months I may just go ahead and do a Group Buy on a lighter 459 size bullet. I have been running a 210 grain bullet for side matches but it is a little light.

Ho the campfire,

How's the coffee?

I've been thinkn' that the original PRS boolit would size up to .459 and that it might very easily get closer to 300 grains by makin' the nose a mite longer.  I've shot the 250 grain PRS in my 45-70s and if they are fairly soft, 1:20 or so, they bump up to fill the groves in my 45-70 roller just fine.  It's a light shoot and plenty accurate out to 200 yards.  My mold drops the PRS bullets at near .456 as it is.
