Lubrisizer not working right

This evening I was lubing some bullets when I noticed it was taking 2 or 3 turns to fill the lube groove.  Normally it takes a quarter of a turn.

I took off the top cover and noticed the part that is supposed to put pressure on the lube was turning with the bolt.  Do I need to roughen the outside of this or roughen the inside of the lubrisizer so that it stays stationary instead of turning?

I think you just have an air pocket.  Keep turning and see if it doesn't work itself out.

Obviously this complicated apparatus has too many moving parts.  ;)
If you do either you risk getting a note from RCBS similar to what I once received from Hornady, "We have repaired this under warranty, next time please contact us first before you attempt to repair it yourself!"  8)

It sounds like you need to replace the o-ring on the lube plunger. The part number is 80051 according to the diagram which can be downloaded by clicking HERE.

You've got some air trapped.  Crank it and let it phart.  I've had the very same problem, only mine lead to brown shorts. . . ;D ;D

P.S.  The Star unit can also suffer from air and need to get burped.

It sounds like you may have a real problem there.  It's HELL getting older, isn't it?

You don't mention what type of lubesizer that you have.  On my Lyman there is an 'O' ring that seals the piston to the side wall of the lube chamber that keeps it from turning.  You might check the 'O' ring and see if needs replacement.  In addition to Lyman, ACE hardware stores usually have a large selection of 'O' rings.

If you have an RCBS model there must be something similar to seal the piston to the chamber wall and keep it from turning.  Check it out and see if the problem may be there.

Yes I have a Lyman.  An "O" ring you say?? ;D ;D  Heck the sizer never had one from the git go (it was a  used unit that I. Will ketchem gave me)  I guess I was using stiffer lube before.  The lube I'm using now is softer and has some olive oil in it.  The darn thing spins like a top! ;D

Is it just a standard old "O" ring?  Or a flattened type?

I am currently using three Lyman lube sizers, one for each of the three different types of lube that I use.  Two of them have the Pressure Nut (Piston) with the 'O' rings and one of them (a really old, old, old one) has a piston with a spring loaded brass collar and no 'O' rings.

The ones with the 'O' rings have two flattened type rings on the pistons with a square or rectangular cross section.  They are available from Lyman and their P/N is 2990689.  A standard round cross section ring of the proper diameter may work but I don't know that for sure.

I have no info on the spring loaded brass collar as this is the only one of these that I have ever seen and Lyman makes no reference to it.  I bought this lube sizer used this is what it came with.  The 'O' ring type piston can be used to replace this if this is what you have.  I just tried one in mine and it and fits.

A Pressure Nut is also available from Lyman and their P/N is 2990146.  I gather from their parts breakdown that you have to order the nut and rings seperatly.

Bingo!  Thats what I have.  I wonder if it just finally wore down or something.  Guess I need to call Lyman and see what I can do.

Anyone else have experience with these brass pistons?  Can I do anything with it to keep it from spinning?
