Lube question.

I was rereading the various formulas in The Dark Arts. There are several formulas that call for adding cooking oli, olive oil, peanut oil...
Has anyone substitued Ballistol by measure, or at least added it to their favorite mix?

I'm thinking here of using DD's Pearl Lube - wax ring, soy wax and shortening, then adding 2 - 3 tbs. of Ballistol.

My recipe for my big bores is Bayberry tallow, bee's wax, olive oil, and Balistol. Works pretty good.

Howdy RCJ,

Ballistol is spendy.  All the stuff in Pearl Lube Classic, I chose that name to separate it from PL-II, is very cheap.  I wanted to make a lube that would work great and be very inexpensive to mix.

All that said, I've used Ballistol in the mix and it works.  Only thing is, I couldn't fine any improvement over the original recipe.  Of course, I shoot guns that aren't fussy about the lube mix.  Perhaps in some guns that had binding problems it would be a remedy.

Pitspitr, I tried bayberry once, years ago until I was informed by a chemist that the bayberry you buy today is NOT the bayberry of the 19th cen. It's fom Colombia as almost all the North American variety was eradicated in the 19th cen. in the insatiable appetite of the military, hence their switch to Japan Wax. The Colombian variety is green & rubbery and didn't pan lube worth a damn.

I've been using beeswax + olive oil, or beeswax + crisco for many thousands of rounds. Hasn't failed yet.

Howdy Slim,

Crisco™ has stuff in it your guns just don't appreciate.  Things like buttery aroma and color.  Cheap white vegie shortening will do fine without the extra price paid for the Trademark and packaging.  I get mine from Aldis.  Luckily,  the new secret ingredient in PL-II hasn't risen, only the minimum purchase size has gone up.

The toilet bowl rings have gone right thru the roof.  Good thing I don't use them in the new PL-II.  I used to pay $0.69 each for them and they are up to $0.79 now.  The Fifteen percent increase must come from the rising price of oil. . .

Even the Soy Wax has skyrocketed, I love to use Drive By Media language.  It's up from the original $37 per Fifty weight up to over $39.  I think it's all the land being planted into corn for auto fuel. . .

Let's face it,  the price of lubing a Big Lube™ bullet is on the rise.  Why, it may creep all the way up to a penny each, and there goes the neighborhood.

I don't doubt that it isn't the same as the one of days past, most things aren't. The stuff I got wasn't the least rubbery, it was more what I'd call "brittle". I got mine from a candle making store online. I don't remember the name now. Probably doesn't help the mix in the least but at least it smells nice and seems to work in my .45/70s.

My lube recipe is... 1kilo paraffin wax- 1kilo mutton tallow- 1/2 kilo beeswax

Soooooooo....

Howz about I put `bout a tablespoon of Ballistol in with it!!

Whats yer thoughts on that

Whatcha want the Ballistol to do that's not happening now?  Yes, it mixes in real well, but I can't see any improvement on lube performance.

I have to wonder, since Ballistol does mix with water and make a colloidal suspension if it couldn't be persuaded to bring some water to the lube mix in a way that would be stable and homogeneous?  Were that the case, it might make a very cool running lube since the water would convert to high temperature steam.  The barrel wetting might be awesome. . .

Could be a new idea here.
