I am new to this forum, and I am looking for assistance. I am trying to help a friend fix his CVA Remington. The bolt will not drop when the hammer is cocked. When looking at the right side of the hammer, there does not seem to be anything to contact the upper arms of the bolt to cause it to drop and allow the cylinder to index. When the bolt is out of the revolver, everything seems to work as it should. I have never fired a Remington style revolver, and I cannot figure this problem out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

There should be a circular ramp cam on the hammer to contact the bolt's left ear.  The cam is approximately behind the half cock notch.  If there is no cam there at all, there might be a hole the cam was pressed into, and you've lost the cam

I don't know who made the CVA, so I don't know where to get either a new cam or a new hammer.  Call up VTIgunparts.com website or phone, the number is on the website.  Lisa there should know either the maker, have the part, or know where to get it.

Good luck and good shooting.

You might have a broken bolt spring. Under the trigger guard there is a flat spring with two legs. One leg rests on the trigger and the other on the bolt. It is not unusual for one of the legs to break off. This problem occurs on both Remington and Colt single action style revolvers. Springs are available from many sources. Some replace them with piano wire springs which last longer.

Thanks for the help. I called VTI and they were out of parts, but Lisa put me in touch with a feller that might have some parts later. The problem is the hammer, as there are no springs broken. I'm told the CVA revolvers are a little smaller than the others, so parts are a little more difficult to find.
Thanks again,

As you have determined the problem to be with the hammer, what exactly is the problem?  Has the cam worn off (or been lost if it is a press in cam)?

I have modified the hammers on my '75 Remmies to use Colt cam buttons.  Cam buttons are available from Brownells - part number 998-100-022 - $9.50 for a pair.  Heck of a lot cheaper than a new hammer if you have the wherewithall to drill the correct diameter hole in the correct location.
