Gents,

Would anyone be interested in an EMF (Uberti) 1875 clone in .44/40.
It's been lightly used and taken very good care of. $300 + shipping.
It needs to go through an FFL.

I'm thinking about replacing my hand spring with a bobby pin or something. Anybody know if a bobby pin will need to be tempered?

Marshal Will Wingam

It does. Mojave Gambler once wrote a how-to on it. As I recall, you have to take all the temper out of it to bend it without breaking. Clean all the finish off one part of it so you can see bare metal. After it's the shape you want, then heat it slowly with a low torch until it just starts to turn color and quench it in water. There's a thread on it somewhere and if you do a search, you may find it or a link to The Hobby Gunsmith article that described how to do it.

I looked for the article, but couldn't find it. Here's a link to The Hobby Gunsmith. At the bottom is a link to send him (Keith Chiles) an email. He might be able to steer you in the right direction.

What Marshal Will said more or less.   Bobby pins make fine hand springs and they are dead simple to make and seem to last forever.  The method I use is the same as Mohave Gambler (that's where I got it from) ...  Bend the bobby pin to the desired shape, heat it to cherry red and quench in water or oil (I use water), clean it up so it is shiney and very carefully heat it up to blue at the end of the flame and let it air cool.  If you happen to over heat it at this point just get it red again, quench it again, clean it up and once again carefully heat it to blue.  It heats up really quite fast so be patient and you'll get 'er done.

The ones I made have lasted for three years now and are still working just fine.  Your milage may vary ...

Thanks, SH, I couldn't remember exactly the process. You have it right. I guess I'd better make one so I can remember.
