I can hear Tex Ritter when I read tha words....

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler,
I'm a long way from home;
And if you don't like me,
Just leave me alone.

I'll eat when I'm hungry,
I'll drink when l'm dry,
If the hard times don't kill me,
I'll live till I die.

Rye whisky, rye whisky,
Rye whisky, I cry,
If you don't give me rye whisky,
I surely will die.

For work I'm too lazy,
Investment's too slow
Train robbin's too risky,
It's gamblin' I'll go.

I'll tune up my fiddle,
And I 'll rosin my bow,
I'll make myself welcome,
Wherever I go.

Beefsteak when l'm hungry,
Rye Whiskey when I'm dry
Greenbacks when I'm hard up,
And religion when I die.

They say I drink whisky,
My money's my own;
All them that don't like me,
Can leave me alone.

Sometimes I drink whisky,
Sometimes I drink rum,
Sometimes I drink brandy,
At other times none.

But if I get boozy,
My whisky's my own,
And them that don't like me,
Can leave me alone.

Jack o' diamonds, jack o' diamonds,
I know you of old,
You've robbed my poor pockets
Of silver and gold.

Oh, whisky, you villain,
You've been my downfall,
You've kicked me, you've cuffed me,
But I love you for all.

If the ocean was whisky,
And I was a duck,
I'd dive to the bottom
To get one sweet suck.

   But the ocean ain't whisky
And I ain't a duck,
So I'll play Jack of Diamonds
And trust to my luck.

My foot's in my stirrup,
My bridle's in my hand,
I'm leaving sweet Lillie,
The fairest in the land.

Her parents don't like me,
They say l'm too poor;
They say I'm unworthy
To enter her door.

Sweet milk when l'm hungry,
Rye whisky when l'm dry,
If a tree don't fall on me,
I'll live till I die.

I'll buy my own whisky,
I'll make my own stew,
If I get drunk, madam,
It's nothing to you.

I'll drink my own whisky,
I'll drink my own wine,
Some ten thousand bottles
I've killed in my time.

I've no wife to quarrel
No babies to bawl;
The best way of living
Is no wife at all.

Way up on Clinch Mountain
I wander alone,
I'm as drunk as the devil,
Oh, let me alone.

You may boast of your knowledge
An' brag of your sense,
'Twill all be forgotten
A hundred years hence.

In my little log cabin,
Ever since I been born,
Dere ain't been no nothin' -
'Cept dat hard salt, parched corn.

But I know whar's a henhouse,
De turkey he charve;
An, if ol' Massa don' kill me
I cain't never starve.

Rye whisky, rye whisky,
You're no friend to me;
You killed my poor daddy,
God**** you, try me.

I guesss I have always been a rock n roller (listening to LA Woman as I type)  but I always like them Cowboy songs,.....Cowboy or Country and Western, < a word that has been dropped completely down in Nashville.

heres another MMM does I like

Way high up in the Sierry Peaks
Where the yellow-jack pines grow tall,
Old Buster Jiggs and Sandy Bob
Had a round-up camp last fall.

Well they took along their running irons
Maybe a dog or two,
And they 'lowed thy'd brand every long-eared calf
That came within their view.

Now every little long-eared dogie
That didn't push up by day,
Got his long ears whittled and his old hide scorched
In a most artistic way.

One fine day, says Buster Jiggs,
As he throws his seago down,
"I'm tired of cowpiography
And I think I'm a goin' into town."

Well they saddled up, and they hit a lope
For it warn't no sight of a ride,
And them was the days that a good cow-punch
Could oil up his insides.

Well they started in at Kentucky Bar,
At the head of Whisky Row,
And they wound her up at the Depot House
About forty drinks below.

Well they sets 'em up and they turns around
And they started in the other way,
And to tell the God-forsaken truth
Them boys got drunk that day.

They was on their way, goin' back to camp
A-packin' that awful load,
When who should they meet but the Devil himself
Come a-traipsin' down the road.

He says, "You ornery cowboy skunks
You better go hunt for your holes,
'Cause I've come up from Hell's rim rock
Just to gather in your souls.

"The Devil be damned," says Buster Jiggs,
"Us boys is a little bit tight;
But you don't go gatherin' no cowboys' souls
Without one helluva fight."

Now Buster Jiggs could ride like hell
And throw a lasso, too,
So he threw it over the Devil's horns
And he took his dallies true.

Now Sandy Bob was a reata man
With his gut-line coiled up neat;
But he shook her out and he builds a loop
And he roped the Devils hind feet.

Well they stretches him out and they tails him down
While the running-irons were getting hot,
And they cropped and swallow-forked his ears
And they branded him up a lot.

Well they trimmed his horns way down to his head
Tied ten knots in his tail for a joke,
Then they went off and left him there
Tied up to a little pin oak.

Now when you're high in the Sierry Peaks
And you hear one hell of a wail,
Well you know it's just the Devil himself
Yellin' 'bout them knots in his tail.

These two have always had a spooky connection to me. I've posted this before somewhere. If it's a dupe, opps.........

The Old Cow Man

I rode across a valley range
I hadn't seen for years
The trail was all so spoilt and strange
It nearly fetched a tear
I had to let ten fences down
The fussy lanes ran wrong
Each new line would make me frown
On this morning song

Ummmm Ummm
Hear 'em stretchin' out the wire
The urban brand is on the land
I reckon I'll retire

While progress toots its greedy horn
Makes its motor buzz
I thank the Lord I wasn't born
No later than I was.

It was good to live when all the sod
Without no fence or fuss
It belonged in partnership with God
Mother Nature and to us
And where skylines bound from east to west
Room to go and come
I liked my fellow man the best
When he was scattered some.

Ummmmm Ummmmm
Closer 'n closer crawls the wire
Why there's hardly play
To step away
To call a man a liar

Their house has locks on every door
Their land is in a crate
These ain't the plains of God no more
It's only real estate

When my ole soul hunts range 'n rest
Beyond the last divide
Plant me in some strip of west
Sunny, lone 'n wild
Let cattle rub my tombstone round
Let coyotes mourn their kin
'N let horses come and paw the mound
But don't you fence it in

Ummmm Ummmmm
Far 'n farther flings the wire
To crowd 'n pinch another inch
Is all their hearts desire
The world is overstocked with men
Some will see the day
When each must keep his little pen
But I'll be far away

Ummmm Ummmmm
While progress toots its greedy horn
Makes its motor buzz
I thank the Lord I wasn't born
No later than I was.

Serenade the weekend squire, who just came out to mow his lawn

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care

See Mrs. Gray she's proud today because her roses are in bloom
Mr. Green he's so serene, He's got a t.v. in every room

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Here in status symbol land
Mothers complain about how hard life is
And the kids just don't understand

Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray, to places far away
I need a change of scenery

didn't know'd JR covered it but I found it today one of them Ian tunes I like

; Think I'll go out to Alberta
Weather's good there in the fall
I got some friends that I could go to working for.
Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I ask you one more time
But we've been through this a hundred times or more.

Chorus: Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that run high
All those things that don't change come what may.
If all the good times are all gone
Then I'm bound for movin' on
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

If I get there before the snow flies
And if things are lookin' good
You could meet me if I send you down the fare.
But, by then it would be winter
Not too much for you to do
And those winds sure can blow cold 'way out there.

Chorus: Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that run high
All those things that don't change come what may.
If all the good times are all gone
Then I'm bound for movin' on
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

When life seems full
Of clouds and rain
And I'm full
Of nothin' but pain
Who soothes my thumpin', bumpin' brain?
Nobody

When Wintertime comes
With its snow and sleet
And me with hunger
And cold feet
Who says "Here's two bits, go and eat"?
Nobody

Well, I ain't never done nothin' to nobody
I ain't never got nothin' from nobody, no time
And until I get something from somebody, sometime
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time

When Summertime comes
All warm and clear
And my friends see me
Drawin' near
Who says "come on in and have a beer"?
Nobody

Well one time when things was
Lookin' bright
I started to whittlin' on a stick one night
Who said "Hey! That's dynamite!"?
Nobody

Mmmm, I ain't never done nothin' to nobody
I ain't never got nothin' from nobody, no time
And until I get something from somebody, sometime
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time

after reading all them posts about the cold weather, I be singing this song somewhere, heading south. ;D

On a highway headed south somewhere to Dixie
Where the cotton blooms in spring and snow don't fly
I'm gonna rest these chilly bones in southern sunshine
And live where the weather's warm until I die
North Dakota you've got my better years Montana you've got five years of my life
But your subzero wind will never touch me again
Southern folks can't live on snow and ice
On a highway headed south...
When I cross the Dixie line I'll throw away my coat
And my goose down underwear will have to go
I'll never live again where the weather chills you to the bone
I'm tired of livin' like an Eskimo
On a highway headed south...
On a highway headed south...

We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

"Hey Porter" by Johnny Cash

Hey porter! Hey porter!
Would you tell me the time?
How much longer will it be till we cross
that Mason Dixon Line?
At daylight would ya tell that engineer
to slow it down?
Or better still, just stop the train,
Cause I wanna look around.

Hey porter! Hey porter!
What time did ya say?
How much longer will it be till I can
see the light of day?
When we hit Dixie will you tell that engineer
to ring his bell?
And ask everybody that ain't asleep
to stand right up and yell.

Hey porter! Hey porter!
It's getting light outside.
This old train is puffin' smoke,
and I have to strain my eyes.
But ask that engineer if he will
blow his whistle please.
Cause I smell frost on cotton leaves
and I feel that Southern breeze.

Hey porter! Hey porter!
Please get my bags for me.
I need nobody to tell me now
that we're in Tennessee.
Go tell that engineer to make that
lonesome whistle scream,
We're not so far from home
so take it easy on the steam.

Hey porter! Hey porter!
Please open up the door.
When they stop the train I'm gonna get off first
Cause I can't wait no more.
Tell that engineer I said thanks alot,
and I didn't mind the fare.
I'm gonna set my feet on Southern soil
and breathe that Southern air.

several songs remembering Dixie, ain't they?

All the stations up here don't sign off with Dixie,
The way they did in sweet home Alabama,
The people here don't sip Jack Daniels whiskey,
The way they do in that Tennessee mountain land.

I've always heard lots about the big apple,
So I thought I'd come up here and see,
But all I've seen so far is one big hassle,
Wish I was camped out on the Okachovee.

If this is the promised land,
I've had all I can stand,
And I'm headed back below that Dixie line
Well I just don't fit in,
And I'll never come back again,
I'm busted here with Dixie on my mind,
Oh, I'm stuck up here and I got Dixie on my mind.

These people never smile or say a word,
They're all too busy tryin' to make an extra dime,
Oh I'd love to haul 'em all down around Spartanburg,
And show 'em how to raise hell in Carolina.

Oh, the things you know that I miss most of all,
Is the freedom of the rivers and the pines,
They don't do much huntin' and fishin' up here ya know,
But I have met a few squirrels and one porcupine.

If this is the promised land,
I've had all I can stand,
Wish I was down in Houston town tonight,
Well I just don't fit in,
And I'll never come back again,
I'm busted here with Dixie on my mind,
Oh, I'm stuck up here and I got Dixie on my mind.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

Let's all stand up and sing

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
|: Away, away, away down south in Dixie! :|

2. Old Missus marry Will, the weaver,
William was a gay deceiver
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
But when he put his arm around her
He smiled as fierce as a forty pounder
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:

3. His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver
But that did not seem to grieve her
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.

Well dad gum, I think when ya played Dixie, everybody thought we was signing off for the evening  ;D

we'll play another snappy one to get things going.

The stars at night - are big and bright
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The prairie sky - is wide and high
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The Sage in bloom - is like perfume
Deep in the heart of Texas.
Reminds me of - the one I love
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The cowboys cry - ki-yip-pie-yi
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The rabbits rush - around the brush
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The coyotes wail - along the trail
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The doggies bawl - and bawl and bawl
Deep in the heart of Texas.
