Paul Revere and the Raiders did a song about the GTO and you could get a copy of the 45 at your local Pontiac dealer. I remember that song about the SS396 that Arcey was talking about. I had a 66 GTO with the small 389 and automatic when I was in college. My Dad was a mechanic most of his life, until he got elected Sheriff of our County in the Texas Panhandle. We had a wrecking yard, a garage, a radiator shop, a parts store, and a battery/electric shop, all during my childhood. He was Service Manager for the Ford dealership in the early 50's. There wasn't anything better than a Ford flathead to him.

My copy came from Wilkin's Chevrolet in Norfolk. It didn't get much, if any, air play. Only had two rock stations back then. I'm thinkin' Mark Lindsay (sp) may have wanted to forget the flip side – Corvair Baby.

The Raiders were a hit here. I always enjoyed their stuff that came up in rotation like everyone elses' releases. Never understood why that one was kinda ignored. Maybe because it was given away by Chevrolet dealers they considered it advertising. I dunno.....

you fellas remember how back in the 50's and 60's all the dealerships were pretty much just one brand of  car,  and they always had the week they showed all the new cars for that year,  used to we'd go to Tulsa, you could go up 11th street and their was one of every dealer you wanted to see, didn't have to travel a couple of miles see all the years new cars.

We cheated with the Fords. Had family and friends workin' the plant that'd arrange for the ole man 'n me to get on the storage lots as soon as they started comin' off the line.

The indoor I shoot at was Cavalier Ford. The third floor where the range is was service. The buildin' is on Granby Street in Norfolk. If the streets were numbered there it would sorta be at 8th 'n Granby, downtown.

Monticello Ave. parallels Granby. If ya went north on those two streets up to 21st Street then go west a few blocks on 21st, ya could look at any new car ya wanted ta look at. All the premieres were on the same day late in September. I used ta get soooooo excited.

Ain't any there now. They all moved to the 'burbs. Gone by the mid-seventies.

here's one of my favorite car songs...ironically I always preferred FORDS

Mr. Smith had an Oldsmobile
Baby-blue with wire wheels
I took her home the day she was advertied
He said she would leak when it would rain
Sounded like an aeroplane
but I knew she was jewel in disguise

She had a 455 rocket
The biggest block alive
I couldn't hardly wait just to take my turn
She was made for straight-a-ways
She grew up hating Chevrolets
She's a rocket
She was made to burn

Well, who's junk pile piece of Chevelle is this?
Did you boys come here to race or just kiss?
mmm don't ya want to know what I got underneath my hood
I know she might sound like she's missin
but buddy she could teach you a lesson
in just a quarter mile i could smoke you good

In my 455 rocket
The kind the police drive
I couldn't hardly wait to just take my turn
She was made for straight aways
She grew up hating Chevrolets
She's a rocket
She was made to burn

I'm telling you and i ain't ashamed
I cried when that wrecker came
As we skid i thought i heard angels sing
Sounded like the Beach Boys
Hit the curb then began to sail
Took out most of the safety rail
Even the cop asked me, "Man what'd you have in that thing?"

I had a 455 rocket
Tthe very kind you drive
You wanna watch yourself when you take that turn
She was made for straight aways
She grew up hating Chevrolets
She's a rocket she was made to burn burn
Ohh she's a rocket she was made to burn burn

If I had money tell you what I'd do
I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or two
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road

The girl I love, I stole it from a friend
He got lucky stole her back again
Cuz' She knew he had a Mercury, she knew he had a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road

Hey now mama you look so fine
Ridin' round in your Mercury 49
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road

My baby went out she didn't stay long
She bought herself a Mercury, came a cruisin' home
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road

Was a workin' upstairs again today, guess who managed to show up on my CD player, Ol' No Show Hhmself. ;)  Listened to sad songs for about 3 hours, this one is perhaps the saddest cause it's so true. >:(

You know this old world is full of singers
But just a few are chosen
To tear your heart out when they sing
Imagine life without them
All your, radio heros
Like the outlaw that walks through Jesse's dream

No, there will never be another
Red-headed stranger
A Man in Black and Folsom Prison Blues
The Okie from Muskogee
Or Hello Darling
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes

Who's gonna fill their shoes
Who's gonna stand that tall
Who's gonna play the Opry
And the Wabash Cannonball
Who's gonna give their heart and soul
To get to me and you
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes

God bless the boys from Memphis
Blue Suede Shoes and Elvis
Much too soon he left this world in tears
They tore up the Fifties
Old Jerry Lee and Charlie
And old Go Cat Go still echoes through the years

You know the heart of country music
Still beats in Luke the Drifer
You can tell when hew sings I Saw the Light
Old Marty, Hank and Lefty
Why I can feel them right here with me
On this Silver Eagle rolling through the night

Who's gonna fill their shoes
Who's gonna stand that tall
Who's gonna play the Opry
And the Wabash Cannonball
Who's gonna give their heart and soul
To get to me and you
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes

that en thar is a gooooood  one.

I like this one by Old George too

They sent him to Asia to fight in a war
He came back home crazy and asking, What for?
They had him committed, oh, medals and all
To a mental hosipital with rubber walls.

They cut off the funding, oh, they cut off the lights
He hit the street runnin' that cold winter night
Now the streets are the only place he can call home
He seems oh, so lonely, but he's never alone.

He lies there holding his wild irish rose
This crazy old fool in the smelly old clothes
He could have had something much better, God knows
Than a half-empty bottle of Wild Irish Rose.

A baby named Scarlet with laughing blue eyes
(Spoken)
Has been in his wallet, ah! way back since '65
(Sang)
So much was forgotten, oh, so far back in time
Way down in the bottom of a river of wine.

(Spoken)
You know, they found him at Clarkstreet, West 25th
They can't even find a hearbeat, Lord, his fingers are stiff
Just like they're all frozen, he's holding her tight
(Sang)
But the habit, oh, it's broken, this is Roses' last night.

He lies there holding his Wild Irish Rose
But his soul's in a place where a real hero goes
Now he's got something better, much better, God knows
Than a half-empty bottle of Wild Irish Rose...
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

Of course this one is just plain one of the greatest songs in real country music.

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Here's one about a little soiree that's only 122 years old (The party, not the song)  ;) down in Anson, Texas

Way out in Western Texas, where the Clear Forks waters flow
Where the cattle are "a-browzin'," an' the spanish ponies grow;
Where the Northers "come a-whistlin'" from beyond the neutral strip;
And prairie dogs are sneezin', as if they had "The Grip";
Where the coyotes come a-howlin' round the ranches after dark,
And the mocking-birds are singin' to the lovely "medder lark";
Where the 'possum and the badger, and rattle-snakes abound,
And the monstrous stars are winkin' o'er a wilderness profound;
Where the lonesome, tawney prairies melt into airy streams,
While the Double Mountains slumber, in heavenly kinds of dreams;
Where the antelope is grazin' and the lonely plovers call-
It is there that I attended "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball."
The town was Anson City, old Jone's county seat,
Where they raise Polled Angus cattle, and waving whiskered wheat;
Where the air is soft and "bammy," an' dry an' full of health,
And prairies is explodin' with agricultural wealth;
Where they print the Texas Western, that Hec. McCann supplies,
With news and yarns and stories,uv most amazin' size;
Where Frank Smith "pulls the badger," on knowin' tenderfeet,
And Democracy's triumphant, and mighty hard to beat;
Where lives that good old hunter, John Milsap from Lamar,
Who "used to be the Sheriff, back East, in Paris, sah!"
Twas there, I say, at Anson, with the livly "widder Wall,"
That I went to that reception, "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball."
The boys had left the ranches and come to town in piles;
The ladies- "kinder scatterin"- had gathered in for miles.
And yet the place was crowded, as I remember well,
'Twas got for the occasion, at "The Morning Star Hotel."
The music was a fiddle an' a lively tamborine,
And a viol came imported,"by the stage from Abilene.
The room was togged and gorgeous-with mistletoe and shawls,
And candles flickered frescoes, around the airy walls.
The "wimmin folks" looked lovely- the boys looked kinder treed,
Till their leader commenced yellin'; "Whoa! fellers, let's stampede,"
And the music started sighin', an' awailin' through the hall,
As a kind of introduction to "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball."
The leader was a feller that came from Swenson's Ranch,
They called him "Windy Billy," from "little Deadmans Branch."
His rig was kinder keerless," big spurs and high heeled boots;
He had the reputation that comes when a "fellers shoots."
His voice was like a bugle upon the mountain's height;
His feet were animated, an' a mighty, movin' sight,
When he commenced to holler, "Noew fellers, stake yer pen!
"Lock horns ter all them heifers, an russle 'em like men.
"Saloot yer lovely critters; neow swing an' let 'em go,
"Climb the grapevine 'round 'em- all hands do-ce-do!
"You Mavericks, jine the round-up Jest skip her waterfall,
" Huh! hit wuz gettin' happy, "The Cowboys Christmas Ball!"
The boys were tolerable skittish, the ladies powerful neat,
That ol bass viol's music just got out there with both feet!
That wailin', frisky fiddle, I never shall forget;
And Windy kept a singin'- I think I hear him yet-
"O Xes, chase your squirrels, an' cut 'em to one side
" Spur Treadwell to the center, with Cross P. Charley's bride,
"Doc Hollis down the middle, an twine the ladies chain "
Varn Andrew's pen the fillies in big T Diamonds train.
"All pull yer freight tergerther, neow swallow fork an' change,
"Big Boston' lead the trail herd, through little Pitchforks range.
"Purr 'round yer gentle pussies, neow rope 'em! Balance all!"
Huh! hit wuz gettin' active - "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball!"
The dust riz fast and furious, we all just galloped 'round,
Till the scenery got so giddy, that Z Bar Dick was downed.
We buckled to our partners, an' told 'em to hold on,
Then shook our hoofs like lightning, until the early dawn.
Don't tell me 'bout cotillions, or germans. No sir 'ee!
That whirl at Anson City just takes the cake with me.
I'm sick of lazy shufflin's, of them I've had my fill,
Give me a frontier break-down, backed up by Windy Bill.
McAllister ain't nowhar! when Windy leads the show,
I've seen 'em both in harness, and so I sorter know- Oh,
Bill I shan't forget yer, and I'll oftentimes recall
That lively gaited sworray-"The Cowboys' Christmas Ball."

Listened to a little Johnny Cash today also, momma has this one on a 45.

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wonderlust who really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He laughed and kissed his mom
And said your Billy Joe's a man
I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can
But I wouldn't shoot without a cause
I'd gun nobody down
But she cried again as he rode away

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He sang a song as on he rode
His guns hung at his hips
He rode into a cattle town
A smile upon his lips
He stopped and walked into a bar
And laid his money down
But his mother's words echoed again

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself he had become a man
A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mothers words

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

Filled with rage then
Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired
Before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor
The crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

Wherever you might look tonight you might see this wanted man

Went to sleep in Shreveport,

This one from his 96 album Unchained has become a favorite in our household.  Rita and I have let the kids know it is to be played at our funerals.

We saw houses falling from the sky Where the mountains lean down to the sand We saw blackbirds circling 'round an old castle keep And I stood on the cliff and held your hand

We walked troubles brooding wind swept hills And we loved and we laughed the pain away At the end of the journey, when our last song is sung Will you meet me in Heaven someday

Can't be sure of how's it's going to be When we walk into the light across the bar But I'll know you and you'll know me Out there beyond the stars

We've seen the secret things revealed by God And we heard what the angels had to say Should you go first, or if you follow me Will you meet me in Heaven someday

Living in a mansion on the streets of gold At the corner of Grace and Rapture Way In sweet ecstasy while the ages roll Will you meet me in Heaven someday

In sweet ecstasy while the ages roll Will you meet in Heaven someday

git ya all in the Christmas spirit

The blues come fallin', they fall like drops of rain
The blues come fallin', they fall like drops of rain
I've got to spend my Christmas locked up in jail again
In jail on Christmas day again, ain't that a pain!
Oh baby, baby, baby, ain't that a pain!

Oh Santa, Santa, Santa, come here to me in jail
Oh Santa, Santa, Santa, come here to me in jail
Bring me a Christmas present, someone to go my bail
Jail on Christmas day, again ain't that a pain!
Oh baby, baby, baby, ain't that a pain!

This food here, Santa, it ain't fit to eat
This food here. Santa, it ain't fit to eat
Won't you come and bring me a plate of turkey meat?
In jail on Christmas day again, ain't that a pain!
Oh baby, baby, baby, ain't that a pain!

The jailhouse blues have got me, they've got the best of me
The jailhouse blues have got me, they've got the best of me
My baby doesn't love me, I got no Christmas tree
In jail on Christmas day again, ain't that a pain!
Oh baby, baby, baby, ain't that a pain!
