Gentlemen, I hate the rear sight on my Special Short Carbine. It's ugly, the slide sticks, it's ugly, and I don't need a ladder sight since I'm never going to shoot at anything I can't hit with a rock anyway. Did I mention the sight's ugly? I want a nice, simple one-piece peep sight or a ghost ring (are they the same thing?) for my aging eye. Can anyone suggest a replacement?

Oh, yeah, it's a Navy Arms if that helps.

Li'l Rooster, a Marbles full buckhorn looks like just the ticket. Thanks!

Slim, those tang sights are impressive, but I'm not going to shoot buffalo 800 yards away with a 16" barreled Henry. Thanks to you as well.

FCK, WTF?  ;D

Scroll to the bottom and check out the RS-PM-1 adjustable buckhorn. ;)

Price seems right to me!

That's the one I have on my Henry and 66.  It looks very much like one Winchester offered and is pictured in the Madis book.

Dang, Griz, I wish I'd seen that before ordering a full buckhorn from Brownell's. Oh, heck it's not expensive, I'll get one of those too and see which I like better. Merci beaucoup!

Update: Doggone you, Griz, I went and spent twice as much as I intended and it's all your fault!  :D

I am looking for a Henry rear sight. If you have replaced yours are you interested in getting rid of the old one?

Will,

How do you like the Buckhorn compared to the standard Henry rear sight?  Out to what range do you use it?

(Considering one for my Henry Carbine)

I like it for CAS shoots.  I use it like a ghost ring.  For more precise, longer range shots I use the notch.  I haven't shot enough on paper to say how well it shoots a group.  I guess I should do that some time ::)

I broke down and ordered that buckhorn sight from Track of the Wolf.  I shot my Henry in the NCOWS SW Regional and I was not happy with the standard rear.  I found myself "searching" for the front sight many times.  I know the buckhorn will resolve that issue.

Will:  Did you need to sand the male dovetail down or use any shims for the install?

I can't remember.  ??? If anything I filed the male doverail.  It seems that they it right in both the 66 and the Henry.

Installed my rear buckhorn from Track of the Wolf today.  Very easy install with no sanding or shimming required.  I did need to file out some residual casting residue from the inside of the buckhorn.

My only reservation is the crude dull finish on the sight . . . but for $22 what can you expect?  ;D

Thanks to all for recommending this sight.

PAncho, that is the same sight I have on a 1866 Carbine, 44-40. Benched, at 50 ft, it's capable of keeping 10 shots on a 6" paper plate. I do favor my 1866 Rifle (used at the Nats) for longer range work / offhand. It still has the factor sight. The rifle fits me better and probably why I use it often...guess I just shoot it better.

Please share your results with the shat-barreled Henry.

Slim

I had that sight on a Lymans Great Plains rilfe once,,or one very like it. My question...is that a sight that one coulda seen back in the 1800's ? I liked it very well myself,,thought about it for my '73 Winchester as an improvment.

The Maddis text has pictures of a very similar buckhorn sight that was a factory option for the '66 and '73.   Yellowstone Kelly had a similar sight on his Henry Carbine.  The Yellowstone carbine does not have the elevation adjustment.
