Yes, the Second Anglo-Boer War is rather fascinating - lots of elan and dashing heroism on both sides, yet often referred to as the "first modern war" fought by the British Empire - "European" foes, with both sides employing smokeless repeating rifles, machine guns, artillery, etc. The British even invented the Concentration Camp (certainly the name, if not the very concept) during this conflict.

Noticed a large fingerprint in the lower left frame of 'The Dying Bugler' image, wouldn't it be a hoot if it could be ID'd, perhaps the photographer or his assistant?
Best regards and thanks for sharing!

Rattlesnake,

I think we better add these pictures to the GAF web site. Is that okay with you?

Gabe - I noticed that fingerprint too, and thought the same thing!   ;D

Bull - by all means, choose whatever images you wish ...

Since I'm back here responding anyway, here are a whole bunch of other Boer War pictures of various Canadians in South Africa, which I posted on another forum (relating to 20th Century Canadian Militaria and military history).  These pictures were posted by me in a discussion which arose about the Canadian Mounted Rifles (six Special Service regiments of which ended up constituting the bulk of the Canadian contribution by the end of that war).  In a way, they relate very closely to the CAS theme generally, as well as GAF, since the majority of these units were raised in the Canadian West ....

First, the image which generated much of the discussion -   2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in south Africa:

Now, a bunch of others (click on each thumbnail to enlarge) -

5th Canadian Mounted Rifles in camp, Durban, South Africa, June 1902:

Remounts for South Africa, Grand Trunk Railway stockyard at Montreal:

Major Victor A.S. Williams, commanding `B' Squadron, C.M.R. South Africa, on his favorite horse "Joe" - daughter Phyllis in doorway - Winnipeg, 1900:

Headquarters Staff, 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, South Africa:

Next, a cornucopia of assorted images of Canadian Mounted Rifles and Canadians who remained to serve in the late-war/post-war South African Constabulary -

And yes I do like it, the top dutch oven is very interesting, I wonder if those were issued or bought by the troops themselves.  I have had folks in the store from South Africa and they have told me dutch ovens are used a lot in their country.  Few folks from other countries seem to know what they are, but every South African I have met does.
