Was firing my Perritas today, they are 1858 Remingtons, 44 cal, and had a problem with the caps coming off from recoil.  Was not using that hot a load.  I think the caps were remington #10 caps, they had a green filler.  Tried some CCI #10 caps, the ones with the yellow filler and did not have this problem.  Will do some more test firing with the CCI and see if that has fixed the problem for good.  Sure don't want caps falling off when I am in a match.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

It's usually far more important to have a good cap to nipple fit than what brand of cap is better. However, good qaulity nipples, e.g., Treso & Thunder Ridge, seem tailor made for Rem. #10's per my experiences, hence my usage.

Some brands of #10 caps are bigger than other brands of #11 caps, and visa versa.

If it goes on tight... you have to pish a bit with a dowel to seat it, but not wail on it with a hammer to seat it, you are in the right ballpark.

It stinks, but the only way to be sure is to get a can of everything and try them all.

I even found that brands change over time. I have some older Remingoton caps (10 years maybe) that are no where near what they make now, so advice found on the net can be misleading if the advice giver stocked up a few years ago.

If the CCIs don't take two whacks to set them off then you have arrived. A cap that is only slightly tighter than the Rem#10 is the RWS#1075 (often referred to as the RWS#11). I use a push stick to seat my caps. The CCI & RWS are a little thicker walled and do not have as much "give" as the Remington cap which spreads as it is seated and stays on. The thicker walled caps are hard to tell when filly seated since once they grab the cone they get pretty hard to seat further.

The Elderly Kid

I've been shooting my Navy '51 recently with some Dynamit Nobel caps I've had for at least 15 years. I've been pressing them down hard with my capper, then seating them with the hammer. Every one has fired first time. That's pretty reliable.

Elderly Kid,
SASS recent rules don't allow hammer seating of caps so gitcher self a 3/8" dowel cut at a slight angle as a push stick. We can't afford any ADs & DQs.

I also use the Dynamite Nobel's......I use the eraser end of a pencil to set them, It gives enuff to bend slightly but stout enuff to push them on

Lil Rooster,
The pencil eraser sounds nice and soft. If it gets dry, greasy or crumbly I'd worry about it slipping off and the metal sleeve on the pencil catching the edge of the cap & setting it off. On my dowels I've noticed they have formed a concave surface with use and they work fine too.

Shot my 61's yesterday using CCI #11's  TRM nipps (size #11).  Only had 1 time a cap sort-a jambed up.  My fault in using 26 gr 3f.  Night shoot  1 stage after it got dark enough to see the flame, and added a lube soaked wad for effect. (tracers)  Was way cool.  Other than the one time, they worked every time with no jambs, or misfires' using 18 gr, 3f,  rnd ball , lube on top with CCI #11 caps pushed on with my antler push stick.

I agree that cap to nipple is more important than who is the maker.
I use both Remington and CCI's. I get good results with both using the correct nipple and cap combination.
