Here's a look at the new GAF hat wreath and the new GAF collar devices.

The participants at the GAF Department of the Missouri Headquarters Shoot this weekend had an oppertunity to purchase the hat wreaths, but the first collar devices weren't ready untill after everyone had left.

Prices for the hat wreaths is $35.00. A pair of collar devices runs $15.00.

Colonel,
Any specifics on how to wear the hat wreaths, ie color and style of hat.  I thinkin that would look good on my bummer hat.
Color devices would be worn on the garrison clothes, correct.
Thanks,
Pvt Hoover

Looking good, will need to get a set of these eventually, I guess after I get some more needed items (gun cart, lots more ammo...)

Who made these? I've been looking for a vendor to make some "USV" collar insignia like that...

S&S Firearms has the 'U.S.V.' collar insignia.

I've seen it in their catalog, but the style is very much post Span-Am, more like WW1 style, much larger letters and more "block" looking than the metal ones they used in 1898...

Pvt. Hoover,  The GAF hat wreath (and the collar devices for that matter) was styled after the GAR hat wreath, so any place you would have seen the GAR wreath is appropriate for the GAF wreath. At this point there are no Specifications for how or were to wear them. Maybe Gen. Scout can help us here. My first inclination would be to tell you to use your imagination. The collar devices would make nice tie tacks.

Greetings from Australia Colonel,

Thanks for letting us know about this new insignia. Is there any chance you would have an email address of the suppliers ? As I would like to order a set for use on my campaign uniform when CAS shooting & it is much easier to order it via email.

Thanks for your time & help. All the best from Australia.

There is nothing in our regulations that specify, prescribe or proscribe how you may wear such items.

In general, we permit the wearing of optional "GAF" items such as the hat weath, belt plate, etc to be worn in lieu of a similar period correct item.  Therefore, if you want to wear the GAF belt plate instead of the 1851 or 1874 belt plate, or the GAF hat wreath in place of the infantry, cavalry or artillery insignia, then it is considered appropriate.

I tend to wear my GAF belt plate instead of a more appropriate 1851 belt plate when attending a GAF function, or when representing the GAF.  I will probably procure the GAF hat wreath and use it in similar circumstances - especially since I don't wear the GAF medal when shooting.

US Scout,

I was contemplating getting the pins and using them on the collor (sp) of the uniform coat instead of the hat wreath or the belt plate, would that be a correct usage?

I only shoot to support my reloading habit.

US Scout

Old Top,

Wear them as you would similar collar devices, such as the USV worn during the Spanish-American War.

If it pleases you to wear one of the collar devices on your hat, I won't tell you that you can't.

The purpose of these devices, including the belt plate, is to display your membership in the GAF.  Wear them with pride!

Where can I order the belt plate?

Colonel,

Slightly off topic, but do you know if anyone produces/sells reproductions of the GAR hat wreath? I'm considering putting together a uniform for a GAR member portrayal and would be interested in any brass weath.  I don't think I'd want to use originals (if I could afford them) except for "special occasions."  I see that S&S Firearms has the embroidered GAF insignia, small and large, but I'm really looking for the brass as I would not be an officer.

Pitspitr

Will, Check with Trailrider.

Toby, As far as I know nobody is producing a GAR wreath repro. I know someone who could but it'd cost more than an original. The originals are actually pretty sturdy so I doubt you'd screw one up if you were to wear it to a formal banquet. I got the original that we used to make the GAF wreaths off E-bay for about $35-40 if I remember correctly. On the other hand you could get a GAF wreath and wear it as you would wear the GAR wreath and most folks wouldn't notice the differrence. Plus you could display you GAF membership when you wanted them to.

Pitspitr,

Thanks for the ideas.  Especially using the GAF wreath!
