Lyman mold 524 12 AV WO , and has a large hollow base cavity that is adjustable.

What was this mold used for and would it work in a original 56-50 Spencer who's groove diameter is .520" ? ???
I haven't seen it yet, my brother was telling me about it and got it for me.

I did a search and couldn't find anything on it.

These are the numbers:
Lyman mold numbers:  524 12 AV WO
By the 524 I thought it might be a 52 caliber. It's in California, so I haven't seen it yet.

I think someone has given you either incomplete or wrong #'s. Here's a link to all of Lyman's old & some current moulds.

They either have 5 or 6 numbers.

That sounds like the adjustable hollow base mould made up for the reenactor market.  The diameter is .524 and the weight is adjustable because the base plug can be set for different bullet lengths.  It is used in the Mississippi Rifle Musket.  It is an adjustable Minie Ball mould.  Hope this answers your question.  It might work in an original .56, but don't know for sure, as I have not tried it.

I tried Lyman by Email.  Sent them the numbers posted above and this was their response:

We cannot find any reference to the mould you have.  It could have been a custom order

That is a custom 50 caliber mould that was made for Tony Bagdon just before his untimely death about 8 years ago. With Tony's passing, it never made it past the prototype stage. Tony had about a dozen made and passed them out to various N-SSA shooters to evaluate. The 524 is actually the second version. Lyman accedently made the first set .510", and they wouldn't shoot in anything! There should be both hollow and flat adjustable base plugs with the blocks.

I'm one of the people that worked with Tony to develop it. It is a semi-wadcutter design based on the very successful Hogdon 58 caliber N-SSA mould, also designed by Tony. Due to the shoulder, it won't feed through a Spencer magazine (I've tried). It is a great Smith, Maynard, 50 Carbine bullet and carries a lot of lube, so is good for shooting in rough original bores. It's actually too small for 54 caliber muzzleloaders (Mississippis) or 52 caliber breechloaders (56-56 Spencers and CW Sharps paper cutters). I tried that too.

Tony was a great ballistics designer and you would never meet a nicer guy.

Arizona Trooper,
Thanks. I sent this post to my brother. He bought the mold for me in Palmdale California from an estate sale. The man was a long time shooter, reloader, and gunsmith. I think his name was Richard Trott( spl?). Anyway I can wait to see it and cast some bullets with it!
                          thanks, Harve Curry
