I just finished reading "Indian War Veterans: Memories of Army Life and Campaigns in the West, 1864-1898" by Jerome A. Greene. It is a collection of veteran reminisences many of which are from former enlisted soldiers. A lot of the info came from the members of the National Indian War Veterans Association and was published in the group's periodical "Winners of the West".

I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in the Indian Wars period.

Haven't read this one but anything by Jerome Greene is worth reading.  Thanks for the tip.

Last fall while visiting my daughter at work (she worked at the Chadron Best Western) a guest came to the desk and asked for an extra towel. He said he was Jerry Greene from room WXYZ and I said "yeah, you ARE aren't you? I enjoy your books." He looked at me with a shocked look on his face and said, "you do?" :D :D We ended up having a really nice visit. Great author and a really nice guy.

I've found that most "big names" (at least to us) are usually down to earth people.  Over the years I've met authors, artists, generals, and a few "famous" politicians.  A few were self-righteous jerks, but most were nice folks.

Many years ago I was in Santa Fe, wearing a uniform of the Regiment of Mounted Rifles.  It was rather distinctive and I'd gotten lots of requests to pose for photos.  One gentlemen came up and made the same request, saying he was an artist and might want to use the photos for a painting.

I asked who he was - Tom Lea he says.  I'd been familiar with his work for many years, and had just recently purchased a print of his latest painting - and said as much.  We chatted for a bit and he invited me to his home for dinner.  His studio was incredible - like walking into a museum.  We talked about all kinds of things and it became one of my fondest memories.
