This was great information even if a person just wants to improve their outfit.  Sure hope it's mislaid not lost.

I hope it is retrievable. I am interested in investigating the Originals class.

G.W., you would be a great addition to the Originals!  Few people have done the research that you have regarding the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

I am very interested in pursuing this. I am afraid I will have to muster out of the artillery in order to participate in the Originals class dues to a lack of firearms available to military men of the period which also work for NCOWS. I should be armed with a Springfield Trapdoor in 45/70 (Rifle or Carbine) and that would not be allowed in our activity. The 1873 SAA would be fine though. I have a little documentation about private purchase firearms being allowed in the Western Army but nothing concrete.

Several options. A Spencer carbine wins lots of style points....or, you could be mustered out of service & come back as a scout?...or, how about promotion to an officer (involving a hefty pay raise). Officers had the option of using private purchase firearms...at least in the 7th cavalry - should be a good starting point for documentation.

The field piece of artilleryman would be cool, but hard on targets and backstops  :o ;D

There is also good information and articles by Marlan Ingram in the Talley Book, at the end.
