Gents,
I recently purchased a Marlin CB with 24" octagon barrel.  Now that I have it, I see it has a darned billboard on it!  I can't stomach the thought of that.  Does anyone know, have a method for this thing being removed?  Know of a good 'smith that can do it?

Yes, I'm willing to pay the freight to have it reblued.  Anything to get rid of that crappy billboard.

Thanks,
El Mac

Anyone (even you) with a sure eye and a good draw file can remove the factory markings if they go slowly.

Remember this, though - the work better be perfect, since the flats reflect light well, the roll stamping's deep and imperfections are easily spotted - lessening the eventual value of the piece.

The markings have been there awhile, now - placed by the manufacturer to comply with law and to attempt to obviate those in our litigious society who persist in doing stupid things with firearms and ignoring firearms safety.

Removing those markings may well be what you want - but it may also detract from the eventual sell/trade value.

Marlin replacement barrels used to be quite common at GunPartsCo - it 'may' be a better idea to buy a finished product and 'save' the factory-issue barrel, since installation's pretty straightforward...

Good Luck.

In the movie The Missing the young girl was using a Marlin and I noticd all the writing on the barrel.  Otherwise I thought they did pretty good.

Unfortunately our great nation still lets stupid people, the insaine, and ignorant people buy guns. That is the Second Ammendment in a nutshell. It doesn't say you have to have a sound mind or be smart to keep and bare arms.
I persoanlly don't see anyway to get rid of that except to get a new barrel like was mentioned. Not that I am knocking the filing method, but to get all the flats the same size would be virtually impossible , especially by hand. I aint that good myself. The hours of filing would justify a re-barrel instead, for me. That stuff is deep, especially on Marlins.
I end up Gold Loading most of my guns stamping, engravings, numbers, caliber designations just to soften the ugly Bill Board notice and just try to ignore that it is unnesassary for me, but nesassary for others to know that they shouldn't point the gun towards their face. Yes, it chaps me too when I look at my $400 Old Silver Pietta pistol and it says right in between the engraving on the barrel that I should only use black powder. But on the other side of the barrel, a relavant posting of .44 cal. I do find ok to have there in my own mind even. How else besides a Micrometer would you know, besdies buying a bunch of roundballs and shoving in the right one to see what caliber it is?
So I guess your ina quandry now, so start filing now and by X-Mas you'll be done, or buy another barrel, or live with it. Better yet, don't buy Marlins if your worried about printing you can't live with. Brownells sells umpteen barrels for the Marlins, I would go that route myself. Or you could add some printing to the billboard that goes something like " The Marlin , Americas Mangled Beauty " and just load it up with gold load and start shooting it.

The factory stamping will affect the 'light' on the flats deeper than the stamping appears to be. When they stamp, it 'compresses' the metal below the surface of what you see visible, so, that when you remove the obvious,,,you still have distortion in the metal below,,and it may vary from shallow to near the bore. One might NEVER get rid of it all.
I think id rather have the stamping that the 'screwy' light reflections that you surely will have.
Perhaps an imaginative engraver you know can work a 'pattern' around said stamping and help absorb it into the engraving and thus some of it 'might' disappear?
Heck, wrap it in a  'rawhide' and call it a quick frontier 'fix.'  There are ways,,there are ways......
Id just be hestiant before starting drawfiling right yet...
But again, one would be suprised how many letters and numbers you can absorb into engraving,,,,

Deadwood   ps,,,on Miz Stacys line of thought about stupid people and necessary warnings,,,,the best I ever had was,,,,from a modern microwave,,,'Dont dry pets or children in this unit,,,"   I lie you not,,it was in the booklet.

My Lovely Bride's hairdryer has a tag on the cord with a lot of verbiage on it, part of which says, "Do not use this device while swimming or bathing."

Stupid people with guns doesn't scare me as much as stupid people with voter registration cards.

What about silver soldering it up, then refinishing the thing?  Or would that require too much heat and warp the barrel?

Do aftermarket barrels come marked up with the stupidity?

Stacey Lee

El Mac,
You can buy barrel blanks with nothing on them, no finish, finish, no markings, markings, the list is too long to go into, but go check out Brownells website, www.Brownells.com, or order thier Cowboy Action Catalog, its free, or at least it was to me ? They have Marlin EVERYTHING in thier for your rifle, go check it out. Call thier techs about what is the least intrusive stamping-wise, they will know this for sure, very brite people on the crew there.
Even if you silver solder that stamping, "A". it probably won't take to kindly to it for one, "B".and it is still going to look like you silver soldered it, reguardless. "C". It aint going to Blue the same color as carbon steel, or at all to your liking.

My other question is where do I find a dog that will get into a Micro-wave ??? I want one !!!

Sincerely, Stacey Lee

Since Ruger is the only other manufacturer to so mark their barrels, I wonder what law you're thinking of?
