Any of you seen a reference or have a pic of one perhaps in a collection,,a 1860 Army C and B with original ivory grips?
Am just curious if that was 'vogue' that early.
Thank you.

Ivory was used by gunmakers earlier than you'd think and an 1860 Army was no stranger to a pair of smooth or carved grips.

Colt put them on pretty much everything he offered, with the Models 1849 and 1851 possibly the most commonly adorned.

It was popular with those revolvers offered in cases.

Take a look at:

'The Book of Colt Firearms' - by Sutherland and Wilson
'Steel Canvas' - by Wilson
'Packing Iron' - by Rattenbury

A lot of early ivory is featured, and with good reason, since it was heavy, warm to the touch and offered an excellent material for decoration, should such be desired.

I have a photo somewhere (unscanned) taken in the Texas Ranger Museum of a whole pegboard full of ivory gripped percussion & conversion Colts. Probably about 25 or 30  & impressive beyond belief.

Does anyone have an idea of what ivory grips cost in the Cowboy period(1865-90)?

In looking at all these wonderful pictures, I thought I would show the modern equivalent you can get.   Here is my Army, navy and rem.    The navy grips are awful, came with the pistol from Cabela's.   The army is a Pietta, and I added a descent pair of Ivoride (not sure if that is the spelling) from Dixie's Gunworks.  They look and feel pretty real.   Don't want to highjack this, but you can get a similar shooting one for a resonable price.
