Marshal Don

Has anyone had any experience with the site www.civilwarweapons.com for serial number searches? They offer a records search through their archives for $15.00. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
Marshal Don

Is it true that if armscollectors site doesn't list your serial number then most likely there is no information available??

St. George

Yes.

The only available information is what the Regulars or Volunteers had on file - and only applies to initial issue - not to subsequent re-issue, cross-levelling or battlefield pickup.

Plus - not all of this information will apply, since not all weapons were issued 'en bloc' by serial number - gaps do exist.

All too often, a weapon found in the hands of the family will never have seen the soldier's hands - having been purchased long after the conflict by that veteran as a souvenir of service.

It goes a long way towards explaining some of the pristine examples that purportedly have 'family connections' - when the actual weapon may've seen harsh service and poor maintenance.
