Have you seen the C.S. Fly photograph, AN EARLY TOURIST?  I sent it to the SHOOTIST a couple of years ago.  There was a discussion on just this topic.

I saw a picture of John Wayne with a cartridge belt that had been modified, let out and laced together to get around his middle.  That was Hollywood, but I've seen similar examples in museum exhibits.

I think it would be very unlikely someone in the old west would throw out a leather belt just because they had gained a few pounds.  Piecing it together seems more prudent.  Heck if the Duke did it...its good enough for me.   I wonder if they had Weight Watchers back then!   ;D   Safe shooting.  Deadeye.

I always thought it was the humidity that caused the shrinkage.  About a month ago I tried on my old military tunic, although i could still button it up it was a tad tight.  Thought I should take it off as I didn't want to kill any one with the metal buttons popping off. :D :D :D

Letting one out - here's one I did for a customer based on an original........

to the left of the holster you can see where the billet used to be sewn on - it's now moved to the right and laced on with rawhide and a new rivet added a fairly normal "bunk house" repair............

Dang Nolan, you coulda sewed them stitch holes back up and called them a decorative stitching pattern, hmmm $20 extra woulda covered it!!!!

Um... you mean it's NOT the wife's laundry skills that are making my pants too tight?!?!?!?!

Surely it's possible to shrink a pair of pants 5 inches in the waist.... right?

Shrinking leather goods is certainly one of the more important issues of our day.  That and global warming and a shortage of dear that will stand still long enough for my flintlock to fire.  But as long as you have folks out there like that Sackett; that can make a cobble job look like art work, then we probably don't need to get Al Gore involved.

I think it is something in the air in closets.  My cowboy clothes and belts are smaller every time I put them on.

Global warming is causing leather to shrink. Ya stand in the sun (warmer than ever before) and it shrinks the leather.

Ya' want to be careful standing around in the sun these days.  I've been talkin' with a solar physicististis, or philanthropist, or a solar whatchamistist...anyway, a feller who stands around and stairs at the sun.  Several years ago I noticed the intensity of the sun was the same at two thousand feet as I remembered it being a seven thousand feet.  I started doin' some research and found that the surface of the sun has become increasingly active.  By tracking the radioactive carbon 14 isotopes trapped in the polar ice caps, they can prove the surface of the sun has been more active in the last 40-60 years than any time since the last ice age.

Some scientist believe this increased activity on the sun's surface, and the resulting solar wind and electronic pulse, is what has turned the earth off it's axis.  Not only is all this causing some strange weather, but when the surface of the sun is acting up, you can get a real bad sun burn when you wouldn't ordinarily.  It pays to have a wide brimmed hat these days.

Dr. Bob

Will G.,

Thanks for that info.  Could that be what's causing global warming??  Ya think? ??? ??? ???

Howdy y'all,

I am having the opposit problem.  I'm the one who has been shrinking and may have to move the tab with the holes a bit.  Now I am so glad that I opted for no ctg. loops! :o ;D  Least, I know the solution! ;) ;D

Dr. Bob;  I hope the leather stretching is a healthy change.

Sir Charles,

Yes it is.  I decided that it would be healthier if I weighed a bit closer to my recommended gvw.  Eating a bit less and walking more has provided a slow weight loss over a year and a half.

[gvw = gross vehicle weight] ;D ::) ;D

As Baxter Black said, "There ain't no such thing as a chubby cowboy, in the wild!".

Curley Cole

What Will said, I saw the Duke rig he was talkin about, and ifn you think back to the early tv westerns (including the early Bonanzas)
almost all the gun belts were that way...and to be sure the holster for my Mattel Fanner Fifty was set up to adjust that a way.
