Just wanted to introduce myself, and say Howdee to all you fine folks, and even the not so fine folks. If you like guns, then your probably ok for the most part anyway !!!

I just got my new Pietta Old Silver last night, and also purchased the "Jeweled" conversion cylinder from Taylors for another $290 through Fall Creek Sutlery. All I can say is wow, nice. The Conversion cylinder is super tight , and indexed and functioned perfect right out of the beautiful box they shipped it in. I will comment on the Old Silver , and that would be for $375 it is a really nice price for such a beautifull weapon. The engraving is very nice, ( beautiful ) and at least 75% of the entire gun. What was surprising to me is the fit and finish of this Remington copy? I have been a die-hard Colt 1851 fan forever, this being my first Remington. I am impressed, and I cannot believe I let my stubborn stupidity keep me from buying a Remington for over 20 years just because I did not really care for any pistols that did not have the shape of a Colt grip  ?!?!
Sorry Colt, but I have a new love ! Not that I will ever get rid of my brace of fancy Pietta 1851's, but I can firmly see me purchasing many more Remingtons now, LOL !!!

One thing I notice on this particular Remington is how tight the cylinder fits in the frame when you swap out cylinders, either one of them, the BP one or the Cartridge one ? It doesn't rub on anything, but it is tight on the HAND and you got to wiggle it a little to let it drop into the proper position before it aligns with the cylinder pin. I am thinking a little grease here and about 100 bullets ought to lighten up this chore? Any thoughts guys and gals on that ????

Anyway, just wanted to say howdee, and thanks for reading my long winded post !!

Stacy,
I have 5 Remingtons and had/have a love for Colts byt the Remmies are more versitile & rugged. As for loosening them up, I use generous amounts of automotive greases on the pin, front of the cylinder and on the back of the cylinder & frame where it rubs. The cylinder has to twirl! Grease it. I also take all the innards out and remove any burrs and grease any parts or surfaces that contact other parts. You'll notice the difference.

Sounds like sensible and sage advice to me Hellgate on the lubejob of this here revolver. This thing is tight tight tight. I like that, should last a long time I am sure.
My Pappy works in Alabama inspecting aircraft and has his paws on some very nice greases and lubes he turns me onto from time to time. Time to go aeronautical on this baby !!!
Can't wait to shoot some .45 Colt through it, love that round.
All in all, I think with some lube and some more ( alot ) practice and rounds through it, it will get smoother. Like I said before this is my first Remington, and I don't know squwwwat about it, just alot about guns. One thing I do know, I cannot keep my hands off it or stop admiring the Italian artsy fartsy engraving on it. It is truelly amazing for a machined hunk of metal bliss !!!

Later, cheers, and good day to all.
Sincerely, Stacey Lee

Stacy.........
Congrats on your nice new "Old Silver" and welcome to the world of Remingtons. Remingtons are a joy to shoot, and more maintenance free than the Colt percussions .
I would echo what Hellgate says about lubrication and de-burring. Also if you rub down the cylinder pin with fine emory cloth or sandpaper, to get a nice smooth mirror surface,...it'll spin nicely and more freely when it builds up with BP crud.
Also, when putting in the cylinder,....if ya rotate it clockwise (its normal direction of travel) as it goes in,  the upward movement of the ratchets (pawl) at the back of cyl.  will push the hand back into its window and allow for easier/smoother insertion of the cylinder.  ;)

Like you say, things will also smooth up as you use it.
Have fun!

Hey Stacy,
There was a thread on why we shoot C&Bs in CAS matches over on the SASS Wire a while back and a theme that was expressed several times was how we (C&Bers) develop an intimacy with our revolvers: taking apart, tuning, careful cleaning, tweeking, etc that you don't get from other guns that require less time to make work. You get to know the guns inside & out. I look at shooting/cleaning/caring for perCUSSIN' revolvers as one would look at a religious faith that requires more of you. I have found the after match clean up as a meditative period rather than as a tedium. It's just how I'm wired.

BTW that's my Uberti Remmie speaking in the avatar.

I'm currently out of '58 Remmies [still have two '75's and two 1890's though] but have had at least a dozen over the many years I've been shooting,as well as all manner of other cap 'n' ball firearms, and I think Pietta must send the Old Silver through a special hand fitting. The quality is supurb, and the tolerences are tight.

I also currently own 5 Remmy's 1 uberti Carbine and 4 Euroarms '58 Remmy's. I have found that petroleum based greases and oils tend to make the Remmy's bind powerful fast. I switched to pure Olive oil and have no trouble shooting 5 stages either with the coinversion cylinders and Holy Black or with The C & B cylinders. One hint...polish the cylinder pin and load it up with Bore Butter. It is kitchen grade lube and it is edible.
