If Custer would have survived Reno, Benteen and him would have sat in a circle and pointed to each other as to who was at fault. ;)

I don't have a PhD in geometry, but please explain how two people can sit in a circle.  ??? ;D

Dr. Bob

Kid,

1.  Custer

2.  Reno

3.  Benteen

Looks more like a triangle to me. ;D ;)

But, for the sake of discussion, I'm inclined to give Del his circle metaphor! :o ;D

Read it again Bob.

The comma is the clue.  ;)

Dr. Bob

Kid,

Earl Stanley Gardner would have called this "The Case of the Misplaced Comma!"

Since my by-line says Mongrel Historian rather than Mongrel Comma putin' expert I thank Dr. Bob for forgivin' me and understandin' the meanin'.  And I stand by my statement and thoughts that if anyone of the three were to really be blamed for what happened they all three were to blame.  With all the hatred in the outfit, many dieing before Libby and not wanting her feelings hurt and so on and so forth, I'll stand by a statement I'm well know for that explains what really happened that day.

"Ya ever had a day that everything you did went wrong no matter how hard you tried?  Well Custer had one of those days." ;)

I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Dr. Bob

Del,

I'm no English expert either.  My posts are a little better since I got my new 'puter and can spell check what I write.  I have trouble when my mind goes faster than my fingers on the keyboard.  I also have trouble typing from which comes out form which the spell checker won't correct.  Your point was pretty clear and I understood what you meant!  I would have to agree with you.

Hello the Camp,
Please forgive an old soldier for contributing his mite.  I was at the battlefield a few years back, and a buddy of mine was there last year.  The Park Service is using that Archeological survey (and the book by Fox) as its bible.
I don't think Custer was dropping back troops as rear guards- I think that once contact was established there was constant attrition.
I don't believe that Fox's time analysis is accurate.
And I think that too little credence is based on the previous historiography.
That is probably more than most folks wanted to hear  ;)

Matt, welcome to the discussion.  I have to agree with you.  Although I haven't read the Fox book what I have heard about it goes against much of what I felt when I was there in 77.

Some of his ideas make sense, some of them don't.  But heck if we really knew what happened that day it wouldn't be that much fun. ;)

:D ain't that the truth.  Someone told me that particular battle has had more written about it than every other American battle with the exception of Gettysburg.  And like you say, the endearing charm is that we can't know what really happened so we can say just about anything.
So, I'll tell you what actually happened, and if it's not true, then I am a liar.  Bug eyed slobbering space aliens got Custer  :o

Major2, hello.....& hello to all! I'm new to CasCity & glad to be here. Please allow me to ask a question. I've read the accounts of the Custer debacle & in them I seem to recall that Mitch Bouyer was sitting his horse next to an Army Officer when an Indian bullet came whistling in, crashed thru his skull & splattered his blood & brains all over this officers nice uniform. This forensic evidence you related would seem to discredit that historybook account.............he couldn't very well have fired at the Indians in that condition. Are you at all familiar with the passage I'm talking about? Am I mixing up Mitch with someone else, possibly? I'd appreciate your feedback on this, & does anyone know where a copy of the VHS tape of that program might be gotten hold of? The Military Channel? I saw something similar to it on, I think the History channel, but I'd like to see it again, & thanx, jd45

Will Ketchum

I believe it was Major Reno that had the brains splattered on him.  He took quite some time to recover from it.

The head that was splattered was the Indian scout Bloody Knife.

Thanx guys...........I stand corrected, Del. I remember now. It was indeed, the Crow scout Bloody Knife. I hope someone will check in & provide a source for that video. I went to the military channel's store, but all I found was a re-enactment video, which is not what was referred to here. jd45

Delmonico

Bloody Knife was half Arikara, 1/2 Hunkpapa Lakota.
