I have been using the backer rod for several months now, and it works great. As was said before, it does add a step to the loading process, but it's not that big of a deal.

I load 15 grains (by weight), 1.3 cc if using the lee dipper, of FF 777, with a 1/2 inch length of backer rod, and a 200 grain smokeless lubed bullet. This combo has mild recoil and more than enough smoke to pass muster, while being very accurate out to 50 yards.

My understanding is that there is not enough air space inside a pistol cartridge to cause the concerns of blow up, as there is in a muzzle loading rifle, but the air space does create some inconsistentcy among the shells, resulting in poor accuracy.

Since I started using this meathod, I have stopped looking for any other means of filling the case.

The "wads" created using the backer rod either burn up as they leave the barrel, or follow the bullet out of the gun and disappear in the cloud of smoke. The residue created by the "wad" cleans up with the rest of the burned powder residue.
