I find the old cartridge boxes to be very interesting and the McKeever is very cool.  I decided to make one and here is the result.  I have made a few  changes in mine.  The original had cotton loops, I used leather.  The US logo was stamped and I hand carved it as I had no stamp.  The billet had brass plates and I may add them. I  I have run across quite a few different boxes in R. Stephen Dorseys book and may try my hand at a few of them.  The round Henry auto-loader for one.

I also find the old cartridge boxes fascinating. You just made one of my favorites. I've often thought of making one but just haven't gotten around to it. On the pin, you could silver solder a washer on one end to make things easier. Then all you'd need is another washer and a pin on the other end. Another thing I'd consider is to use aircraft-style tinnerman nuts as keepers. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/airsec/Aircraft/Hardware/Tinnerman.html Clidk on the photo link at the top for the flat ones. You could put a thread or two on the end(s) or simply push them on. They could be polished clean and blued to look more correct, too.

Great job, too. Thanks for the post.

That's a great idea on the washers.  I didn't do the forming on the endcap for the Springfield tool either.  Some had it, some didn't.  I'm going to try and make some of the rare oddities as soon as I get some more data.  Thanks for the reply Marshal and Little Al.

Great job on that, Smitty . . . . Triggersmith that is! I have some sketches of that type I made from an original piece, but neve had cause to make it. I did make one [from an original] that utilized hinges. Love them old boxes!!

Now, if you would like to have a US or CS Stamp, you can get one from Hide Crafters in Fort Worth, Texas. They will make them to order on steel plates so you can use a press or even a C Clamp to make the impression.

Have fun

Much obliged Jack.  Yes I like those old cartridge boxes too.  Gonna make some more.  Thanks for the reply and have a great Holiday.
