Should I do it myself ?

I know this has been tossed around a lot but I thought I would stir the pot again. Should I order some wolf springs and do my own work or should I send it to a good smith? I can change them myself but I am not to sure about putting a dremmel tool to it to smooth things up. I would also like a free spin pawl, is that a drop in piece or does it take some fitting.

Thanks! BSB

The easiest & cheapest is just the springs.
Leave the rest for a 'smith.
It only takes maybe 10 minutes.  No special skill or tools.
Screwdriver for the grip panels.
Pin punch to hold the spring on strut.
Vice to hold strut.
Good table fork to compress spring.

When you say "smooth things up" and "Dremal tool" I get worried, what do you mean by "smooth up."  Tain't nothing in a smoothing up that really require power tools and power tools get jobs over done in a hurry.

The most you'll need is a good stone to remove any evidence of burring - stay away from using any power tools.

This is a simple, cheap fix if you do it yourself - since a lot of folks who claim to be doing action jobs with 'special springs' are using Wolff Spring Kits from Brownell's.

Ruger products are built like a tank - little 'fitting' is necessary, as most all accessories are drop-in.

Before you do any of this - try an even simpler fix - clean it 'thoroughly' - check for any high spots or evidence of burring and wear - stone until smooth, but no more than that - and reassemble with a 'good' lube like 'Pro-Gold' on all bearing surfaces.

You may find that the effort paid off well.

Good Luck.

I think that the dremmel tool part came across wrong. That is the thing I would not do and if I did it would only be with a polishing wheel. My guns are safe though I don't even own one.  ;D How about the pawl, is that easy enough to do ?

Thanks! BSB

Exactly which springs should I order from Brownell's and who has the reverse pawl?

Thanks again!

Brownell's has a Toll-Free number - 1- 800-741-0015 - or type in - www.brownells.com

They'll send you their 'Cowboy Action Catalog' for free, if you ask them for one.

The pawl's no big deal - like I'd said - most of these things are drop-in for Rugers.

Any internal polishing - do with stones and patience and elbow grease.

Go slow, and you'll do just fine.
