Way back when - Nebraska's license plates read 'The Beef State'.

One helluva lot of beef was processed through here, thanks to the huge Stockyards located in what's now South Omaha.

In that light, there's an interesting book that talks about the history of Nebraska's cattle industry - from the early days of the road ranches and trail herds until the eventual demise of some of the larger Livestock Commissions and the shrinking of the stockyards.

Nellie Snyder Yost wrote 'The Call of the Range' for the Nebraska Stock Growers Association, back in 1966.

Published by Sage Books of Denver - it's more than detailed, and loaded with pictures.

It's Library of Congress Number is - 66-30428

Now - this may or may not tie in to your Impression - but the undeniable fact exists that there probably wouldn't've been 'cowboys', had there not been cows to gather and move to market.

Fortunes were built on the backs of these critters and legends abound about the cow-towns of the era.

If you're serious about adding to your overall knowledge of the times and to better your Impression with some interesting facts as well as arcana - I recommend that you seek out a similar publication for your region, as the various states all seem to have Stock Grower's Associations of long standing.
