I had to look it up. 660Feet.

Forty Rod

660 fee, 220 yards, 1/8 mile, a furlong, 10 chains...what are you saying?   :o

A rod is 16-1/2 feet.

I was reading an old Gun Digest (1964) when I came across an article about a gun designed for forty rod shooting.  First connection I made between you name and a measure of distance. Then had to look it up.

Same issue had the "guns for sale" pages from a 1908 Sears-Roebuck Catalog. Belgian shotguns for $11. If you wanted to be ostentatious, $14 and they would engrave it for you.
Trapdoor Springfields for $4.50.  1892 Winchesters or 1894 Marlins for $13.16. Single Action Armys for $15.50, add $4.00 for pearl handles.
I know, money was worth more then, but a guy could dream.

Forty Rod

I'm told that the guns came out of Sunday afternoon pot shoots at 10, 20, and 40 rods.  10 rods dropped out fairly quickly after the sport started getting over-regulated and too organized for the average shooter's tastes, and some people were set on winning even if they didn't want the meat (or other prizes).

Many were so intent on winning they started having special guns made to shoot specifically at 20 or 40 rods.  These later turned into the American version of the German/Swiss "Scheutzen" rifles.

An off-shoot may have been so-called slug guns.

Ain't none of that has squat to do with me.  My eyes were so bad when I got the name I couldn't see an aircraft carrier at 40 rods.

And here I thought you were touting your hot rod.   Hmmm, oh well.

Forty Rod

Saw a '40 Ford woody wagon in Costa Mesa this morning.  Had a roof rack and a fold-up rear bumper cargo rack, and the guy driving was old enough to have bought it new.  It was either restored some time back, or original and very well cared-for.

Very nice, but hardly a "rod".

When I retired from the Air Force, we settled on a 50 acre plot that wasn't fenced. I wanted to erect a fence along the road for my horse pastures but, didn't know how far from the side of the road our property started.

I called the county and they said the road allowance was 33 ft center, or 66 ft wide.  I'm thinking, "that's an odd number, I wonder how they came up with particular number.  I can see 65 ft but why 66."  So, I asked.  They said because the roads were originally surveyed using rods, links and chains.  66 ft = 4 rods
