Would it be possible to reline a NMA reminton barrel that has cracked or would it be best to replace the barrel?
Thanks,

I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Wah Hoppen'!?  Manufacturers fault, or operator error?  vtigunparts list all that stuff, but if it is a warantee job check it out with your vendor.

Sir Charles,

No Idea what happened, I guess metal failure, but not sure.
The barrel has no bulge, or rings in the bore, but has a two inch crack down the center of the barrel.
As to warrenty, that expired in 1876. The gun is a Remington New Model army, post Civil war.
It was converted to .46 rimfire, and then modified to shoot center fire.
The bore is beautiful, except for this long hairline crack. So what ever went wrong either happened early or to a well cared for gun.
I have another NMA for parts and the barrels could I imagine be switched.
As to concerned about the "collectabilty" of this piece, it has been buffed and reblued, so that is not a real factor.
Could one change barrels or would a gunsmith be needed?
Thanks for your interest.

Wow;  140 years of honest use before it failed!  I'm not a gunsmith, but I'm glad to hear you have some original parts to take to one.  I'm sure someone here can recommend someone.
