My new Pietta 58 Remington Army .44's came today.  I was just like a kid at Christmas couldn't wait to open them.  Now I have a question.  What capper works best for Remingtons?  Will be using #10 Remington caps.

I've got 5 cappers of various makes & designs and even the Ted Cash capper wasn't that great til I modified it. Now 4 of 5 will fit the Remingtons. Here's what I did:
On the cheapo cappers from McGees that go for about $4 (single spring) I ground off the lip of the spring to where it just held the cap flush with the spring and no overhang beyond the cap. I also ground back the corner of thebrass housing on the opposite side to shorten it and put a taper in it so that the brass only just supported the cap but didn't stick out beyond it. For the Ted Cash capper, I just ground off the lips of the springs as before so the capper could be inserted deeper and it works fine. The TC capper is a weaker design and the brass backer bends easily so I actually prefer the generic cappers that have a 90 degree brass support of the cap and will not bend during a fit of anxiety while capping on the clock. The cheap cappers hold the cap like on a piece of angle iron where the TC is like on flat band iron. I've even considered epoxing a small nail or something to strengthen the TC's tip but figured I'll just take it easy with it. You need a grinder or a stone and some extra time to fix the cappers for Remingtons.
For the Colts just about any in-line capper will do. But the "Remington modification" makes them faster.
As for the teardrop cappers, I keep dropping caps out of them and losing caps in the gravel at the range. When they work, they work well for Colts only.
I keep an in-line capper and a nipple pick on a cord through my vest button hole for on the clock "reloads".

Howdy, BK!

Congratulations!  And ya got Remingtons, to boot!  Time to apply for SCORRS membership.  2 minutes later ... I just posted this, went to the SCORRS site to get a link for ya, and L0-AND-BEHOLD, there ya are - top poster - crowin' 'bout your new smokepoles.  I would too!  (Uh, I'm not an expert, but don't smokePOLES refer to rifles?  :D  No matter!)

I went another direction to make my OLD (35 yrs) inline capper work.  I ruined my Remington Pistol.  :o  (Well, as far as authenticity goes, anyway.)  I got a rounded-cone-shaped grinding stone and modified the opening where the caps are accessed.  It wouldn't work with my capper, and was difficult to cap by hand.  (Contact Cuts Crooked as to why hand capping can be a BAD idea!  :o )  Now it has a nicely rounded opening that works with the inline cappers I've tried, by hand, and MIGHT work with snail cappers - but I don't know since I don't have one or know of anyone right off hand who I shoot with who has a snail capper.

Have fun!  "Keep yer powder dry!"

Nice lookin' pieces, Bristow.  Bet you're good 'n proud.  Enjoy shootin' them things!

I bought an inline Knight capper.  It was all the shop had when I went lookin' 'n I didn't have time to order one over the net.  It's tight but once I used it a little I got the hang of it.

Nice pistols.  Have fun with them.

I have an in-line capper (don't remember brand) and had to grind down the tips of the springs that hold the cap in place when you cap the nipple.  They stuck out about an 1/16" and made capping impossible with my Remingtons and Colts for that matter.  Once I ground down the springs I've had no problems with my capper.

I used a 1/4 inch sanding drum on my Dremel. Removed the nipples and open the slots in the cylinder with the 1/4" drum. Now Ted Cash and TC cappers work fine. You can also load 100 caps, or nearly, instead of 15 in the inlines.

Thanks for the compliments and advice.  I appreciate both very much.

I found a capper that works for my 58's with no mods to gun or capper.  Was getting balls and caps and powder at the local sporting goods store.  And deceided to pick up an straight line capper too.  Its made by Traditions Performance Firearms part # A1203 and it works perfectly for my 58's.  I am hoping the rain quits and I can shoot Sunday.  Will give a full report but so far works fine.

Cincinnati Slim

Howdy All,

Gonna try this here attachment thing to show off my pair of shootin'irons.

Went out to Friendship the day after Thanksgiving and it was a beautiful day ! ;D

Got a Pair of Piettas. Both have had their brass triggerguards nickle plated. Got stainless cylinders with TRM nipples. Remmie wears Gripmaker faux stag grips, Colt sports pair of Buffalo Brothers "Mexican eagle" faux ivory. Both like Remington #11 caps, 30gr. fff, .454 balls with "wonder wads".

Anybody else here shoot Cap and ball revolvers out at the MNLRA Friendship Indiana range ?

Happy Trails,

Slim
