During my c&b introduction session with a pair of 5-1/2" ROAs at the range yesterday(man those things are accurate, 21gr Wano fffg + .458 lead ball  8) ) my tutor happened to mention he had an old Navy in GC for sale $100AUS. Will eyeball it next Monday.

What size ball does it require and what are the minimum and maximum fffg loads?

Thanks,

Mucus the greenhorn  :)

I love my 1858 Remington Navy made by Uberti for Navy Arms in the late '70s.  I load about 23 grs ffg and a lube wad under a 380 ball.  It is accurate but I've had some problems with knock down targets as the the ball doesn't have enough mass to generate the energy required.

Also had some cap issues until I replaced the nipples with Tresos which fit #10 Reminton caps perfectly.

Pretty much the standard for .36 Navies is a .375 round ball or conical.  There are some exceptions.  I have a Uberti Leech & Rigdon Navy and it needs a .380 round ball.  The Leech and Rigdon is a Confederate copy of the '51 Navy.  In the documentation with the revolver it will say what round ball to use.  This assumes that the little booklet is still with the revolver.

Get the feel of the action.  Is it smooth or does it feel like someone threw sand in it.  Check the fit of the frame and grip frame, the grips to the grip frame, and finally push on the wedge (brand new you shouldn't be able to just push it out with light pressure).
Keep your pants and your powder dry!

Mucus,
if it is an older Navy, might make sure it is not an early run from Armi San Marco. They had some problems as far as fit and finish. Make sure it separates into the basic breakdown assemblies easily. Cylinder arbors, or the two frame pins, often were not plumb with the axis of the frames nor barrel.
