An Interesting Find...

I like bookstores - more specifically, older used book stores, as I've found the most interesting things there, since for me, they're a treasure hunting experience, and you just never know what'll turn up.

Yesterday - I wound up with a copy of:

'Home Made Beverages - the Manufacture of Non-Alchoholic Drinks in the Household' - by Albert A. Hopkins.

Originally published by the Scientific American - mine's the edition from 1919, but the material's copyrights date from 1892.

It covers :

Essences and Extracts
Syrups
Non-Alchoholic Beers
Eggs and Milk or Cream Drinks
Frappe's
Ginger Ales, Beers, Pop, etc.
Glace's
Grape juice
Ice Cream Beverages for Fountains
Lemon, Lime, Mint, etc.
Malt beverages
Malted Milk and Mead
Phosphates
Punches
Sundaes
Hot Beverages
Beverages for the Sick
Ciders
Wines and Wine making
Mixed Drinks
Punches

No doubt all completely tested and found suitable, and for C&WAS - a very nice added filip for a banquet or other gathering, as the recipes all pre-date the era.

The Internet is great.  You can find any book that you are looking for.

However;  You go to used book stores to find the neat little book that you didn't know existed.

It's hard to find those on the Internet.

Indeed - and the big chain 'book mega-stores' never have anything obscure.

A good relationship with an independent bookseller can yield a helluva personal library over time, and many will trade or offer a store credit for a future addition.

Most have a coffee pot, too - just no triple-mocha-chocolata ya-ya lattes...

I usually have as many people drop by just to shoot the breeze as I do buying customers.
[I could use a few more customers.]

Requirements for a good book store.

Must be neat but not too neat.
Must have enough light to read.
Two or more comfortable chairs [My chair is in the history dept.]
A coffee pot/urn.
and of course at least 25,000 books.

Contrary to popular belief, a cat is not required.  Though most used book stores have one.
[Cats make me sneeze.  There are three in my shop; one is stuffed, one is carved wood & one is ceramic.]

Nice find, St. George.
I've picked up some nice books from Goodwill, too.

I was in one of the local thrift stores Thursday and came upon a nice cedar Bible box.  It is just the right size to hold my .32cal Merwin Hulbert!  It needed to be re-glued, but that isn't a problem.  Then I just have to make an insert and get some nice red velvet for the MH to rest in! :D ;D :)  Now I can be a bible toting Dr.

You would be more like my hero (Doctor) Doc Adams.  His Bible was right near his Colt, in the bottom section of his bag.

I have a cigar box shaped like a book and my S&W Safety hammerless fits perfectly.
All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream. -- T.K. Whipple

Doc. N.,

I looked for a box made like a book.  Found some that were too big and then ones the right size, but they came 3 toghther in an holder and were nearly $50.  Too steep for me.  'Sides, the Bible box will be a lot of fun! ;D :D ;D

I pick those boxes up when I see them in the thrift stores and at estate sales.

They're relatvely modern, so they're reasonably priced - and their 'bindings' are all made to resemble old, leather-bound dusty tomes.

They also seem to come in at least two sizes - varying by depth - and you can hide away a lot of your small odds and ends in them - including Pocket Revolvers - yet still maintain an 'Old West' look to your library/den without leaving interesting things out to tempt inquisitive eyes.

Most folks don't seem to want to look closer at a 'pile of ol' books'...

Hobby Lobby has unfinished wooden boxes made to look like books, but the spine is a drawer front that pulls out. Could be covered with leatherette or fancy paper, inked and gilded, etc. I got one for my daughter to decorate. Paid around $6.00, I believe. Would fit a pocket pistol with a 3" barrel or so, I think.
