MY HUSBAND  BOUGHT ME A UBERTI MODEL 66 YELLOWBOY. MY BRAND NEW RIFLE FOR MY SASS SHOOTING. I WENT TO TRY IT OUT AND I CYCLED SOME DUMMY ROUNDS IN IT AND IT JAMMED UP. MY HUSBAND WENT TO OPEN UP THE ACTION  AND THIS PIECE OF METAL TAB THING CAME FLYING OUT. I FOUND OUT LATER WHEN I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SPORTS STORE WHERE MY HUSBAND PURCHASED THE RIFLE AND THERE GUNSMITH SAID THAT THE LOADING GATE BROKE AND THAT IT HAPPENS TO A LOT OF THESE RIFLES. THAN I AM THINKING WHY DID YOU SELL THIS  RIFLE TO MY HUSBAND  IF YOU KNEW THIS. THIS IS VERY SHAMEFUL OF UBERTI. MY HUSBAND LUCKLY KNOWS A GREAT GUY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. JIM FINCH AND BRAD AT LONG HUNT SHOOTING SUPPLY CHECK THEM OUT AT longhunt.com THEY ALSO ARE GREAT ON ACTION JOBS ON

I know this thread is about 66's,and I have one that I'll have to deal with - sometime.  I have ordered a .44 Marlin.  Where is that reference to preventing/fixing THE MARLIN JAM?

Thanks Arcey;  I had it before but as a technophobe, I didn't write it down or bookmark it.   Next, i'll have to learn how to post pics!

Where can you buy a modified loading gate?  How hard is it to install for an idiot like myself?  I buy all my percussion revolver parts through VTI and noticed they sell a modified 1866 loading gate.  Anybody buy one of these?  Right now I am kinda torn between a 1866 and a 1873.  Which one?

Since you ask on the 15th.

I understand VTI does have reinforced gate ( make sure of your model year VIA the proof date of Manufacture) should look like two letters in as Square  example: [BH] etc.
The hinge pin is larger Dia. on guns of later years.

Or you can or have a gusset silver soldered behind your guns LG tab to reinforce it.
Our hobby , puts added strain on some of the funniest things with it's added speed & repetition.
Like springs in a Colt or Firing pins in Marlins.
They seem to he hammered more and the result is failure eventually.
As with anything raced, preparation is the key to competition.

I had a 66 years ago it was (OEM Gate) trouble free wish I still had it... but if you have neither and looking to buy , go the 73... IMHO
(that from a fellow that has neither, and shoots a Henry & Spencer  ;) )

RAWHIDE mentioned the KEY word here. PRICE!!!

for what is charged for these guns right now [creeping up to a grand]
there should be NO problems of that magnitude.

in fact, the the prices of cowboy guns in general is starting to get
rediculous. soon, it, like most other sports will be only for doctors
and lawyers which is TO BAD, because this has the potential to
be the ultimate family sport and the average family just will NOT
be able to gear up pretty soon.

oh well, another topic for sure. off of soap box now!!!!   >:(

Well I was lucky and got a very early model 1866 Uberti. I've shot thousands of rounds through it with no problem, including the loading gate.

A pard of mine bought a brand new 66 last month and brought it to the monthly shoot. He made it through two stages of the match before his loading gate tab broke.

Uberti used to make good strong loading gates for the 1866, like on my rifle, but now they're making what looks like a stamped part. How come for the money you have to spend on these guns.

There is now an alternative to Uberti though. Check out the Chaparral firearms site. They produce the 1873 and 1866, both of which are touted to be more authentic then the Uberti guns, and have a lower MSR then the Uberti's as well.

Has any of ya'll put one of these in on your own or is it a gunshop deal?
Thanks anyhoo  ;D ;D ;D

It's not a big deal, you can get them from Brass Action Gunshop in Fremont, Nebraska, just ask for Ed.  Ed makes them and sell them to the big importers, but you can buy them directly from him for around 15 dollars and shipping (or pay the importer three times that amount) ...  I had one of Ed's even break in my 66 and he replaced it for free and apologized because his aren't supposeto break... ;D

Wow, now that is a bit more than scarey  >:(.

I am in the market for a nice rifle to equal out my western collection, so it is nice to know this stuff first, because that is one of the ones I admire at my local shop !!! Ouch !!!

From this board, I am going to Ubertis' to give them my shout-out to help the cause and of course keep people from getting killed, because that could easilly happen with that model I see now.

Thanks for the heads-up , and if you shoot it again , keep your head down !!!

Later, Cheers, Stacey Lee

Hey Be-a-triss, I hope you're not holding your breath.  For one, you assume there's someone at Uberti in Italy that can read/speak english.  I wouldn't count on it.

There is a lady who speaks English at Uberti because she IS English. Her name is Suzanne Webb and she can be reached at  info@ubertireplicas.it

If you are polite she will most probably reply.

Pards, lookey here.

While it is shameful that you get a crappy part with a rifle that ends up costing around a $grand, the part isn't hard to fix.  Why?  I don't know why the part is what it is, but the almighty Dollar (or Lire', oops; Euro in this case) rules and since SOME don't fail, Uberti probably won't make the change.  Don''t forget, in Europe the rifle probably isn't as pricey as here - thanks to import fees and taxes ON A GUN (and we know how loads of politicians are regarding guns, so they'll keep trying to make it as hard as possible to afford one  >:( )  PLUS our brilliant economists keep DE-valuing the dollar to keep us (US) "Competitive" in the world market.  He.., I remember when US goods were the BEST QUALITY  which is why our stuff was more expensive and the dollar was a LEADER, not a follower, but that's another story ... er, rant ... er, well ... you know.  Didn't mean to get political - jes statin' the facts.

Back to the part.  If you can read, (see:)  http://www.marauder.homestead.com/files/Model66.html  and have a bit of mechanical ability, the part isn't hard to change out.  (Yeah - we're back to the "Why?" thing again.)  I'm just trying to help, 'cause I've had a '66 for quite a while now and it is, without a doubt, one of the finest shooting and acting guns I've EVER had the pleasure to shoot!  Out of the box mine was smooth as glass, accurate with ANY load, had a crisp 3 lb. trigger and - except for the weird reddish stain that seems to plague I-tralian guns, just plain beautiful!  The finish was VERY shiny modern, but extremely well done.

Well, enough of my love affair with MY Uberti 1866 repro.  Your mileage may vary.
