Cuts Crooked

...a place to purchase one of the old cookie cutter lube sets. Got a pard who wants to try building his own and I'm trying to help him get started on a tight budget, But I cannot find one of these. (Yeah I could set him up with drilled oout cases but he wants to do it right) Seems like Lee used to market an these but they don't list them on thier web site. Can ya help me out here?

Cuts;  I have had one for about 25 years.  Havn't used it for about 24 years!.  It is a little tin pan and an aluminum tube to loosely fit a bullet.  Anout as simple as you can get. No more sophisticated than a fired case!

These days I only lube-size pistol bullets.  Rifle bullets are not sized at all, only fingerlubed with SPG.  Occasionaly I use teflon tape, for small game potting loads for smokeless hunting rifles..  In other words, i have tried everything.

I can send my .38 set, complete with 24 year old Alox lube thrown in for free!

My recommendation for a newbie to smokeless is LEE tumble-Lube and one of their "push-through" sizing sets.  For BP lube, it is great for your fine motor coordination to finger lube.  Do it in front of the TV to avoid wasteing entertainment time.

Dick Dastardly

Howdy Cuts,

For 45 Colt, back before I got a die for my Star lube/sizer, I used a 45-70 case.  I took some fairly  small diameter copper wire and wound it around the case and soldered it on.  I cut off the back end of the case far enough that the PRS bullets would slide thru.  I liked the rig because the bullets would come up high enough that I could pick them up and put them in my plastic tray.  I got the trays from my sawbones free.  He got blood sample vials in them and used to throw 'em out.  Now, he saves 'em for me and I ship my bullet samples in 'em.

When I  had a tray of 50 I'd put 'em in the icebox.  Then, when I was ready to load I'd take 'em out one tray at a time and tip 'em over on a clipboard.  Presto, Five neat rows of Ten bullets all ready to load.  The chilled Pearl lube tended to stay put a little better.  Now, with Pearl Lube II, I don't have to do that anymore cuz it stays put below 100 degrees by it's self.  I still use the trays tho, cuz I like the way it keeps the boolits clean and neat till I load 'em.  I mounted my Star so it drops 'em straight into the tray.  Now, I'm thinkn'  of a way to make an auto advance index for the tray. . . . .  Maybe, if it's a long winter I'll get that done too.

I also use a .45-70 case when I am just foolin' around with a few bullets and don't want to mess with the sizer setup.
Or take your dial calipers to the hardware store and check the ID of the pipe and tubes, surely there is something that is just right.

Pards, I use a 45-70 case myownself, always have. But I'm tryin ta set this feller up RIGHT with tools intended fer the job. (he's one of THOSE kind of guys ya know, gotta have exactly the right tool made fer the job......) Now I'm sure Lee usta make em, I jist cain't find em anywheres no more.

I love to test my ingenuity.  HST, What's wrong with using a .45-70 case as a cookie cutter?  I still use tumble lube for smokeless, even without the special bullet.  I got my first 450 sizer about 25 years ago, almost as soon as I discovered that pan lubing Alox didn't seem very productive

If your friend wants the proper tools, have him get a new Lyman 450 sizer!

Hay cuts,

Here's a pitcher of mine;

http://goatlipstips.cas-town.com/panlubing4.html

before I found it at a gun show I used a 6" length of tapered golf club shaft sharpened like a hole cutter.  Doesn't sound fancy enough for your pard though.  I've seen the Lee cutters on ebay for around fifteen bucks.

Lyman used to make cookie cutter lube dies.  If you keep track regularly, you can find them on eBay once in awhile, and they draw a lot of bids.  Seems if they're that popular someone should still make them.
I recommend pan lubing and just pushing them out of the cake, then run them through a Lee sizer die.  I make 100's of bullets a year this way.

Cuts,.....your pard might make his own from brass tube. Solder smaller dia. short section within outer tube,...this makes the pills slid through real easy, like this......they come right out the top of tube.

Works mighty fine!  ;D

Be-A-triss Bandit

Easy way is to take a case and drill the primer hole to fit a large head nail.  Push the nail through from the bullet end and stick a little knob or cork on it.  Works, cheap.  Got the idea from somebody else and didn't have to pay a dime.  45 = 45-70 case, 44 = 444 Marlin case 38 = 357 Mag case.  A little over/under don't matter.
