Now, that would be cool.  What model and caliber is it, Books?

Books OToole

It's .44 S & W Russian.  My winter project is working up a good load for it.

I guess I didn't completely answer Pvt. Hoover's question.

Pending approval, my new GAF pistol is an original S&W 44 Double Action First Model Revolver, in .44 Russian.  They were manufactured from 1881-1913. (Mine was built approximately 1887)

[General Leonard Wood had one and John Wesley Hardin was carrying one when he was killed.]

Not only do I have to work up a load for it, I have to create a holster.

I just revisited the Crook gun site.[A neat site]  My eyes saw something that my brain recorded but didn't analyze until now.

The pistol is an S&W American.  It apparently has the proper markings that make it one of 1000 ordered by the army.  However the original 8 in. barrel has be cut down to about 5 in.  Very interesting.

So,  Tell us more about what all goes on at a GAF muster & shoot.  How does it differ from other CAS events?  How do the shooting stages differ?  Can a pioneer farmer form Nebraska Territory wander in and enjoy and do some shootin'?  What would I need that might be different from SASS?  Or should I ask what is allowed or not?

Guns Garrett

Haymaker,
Chantilly would be the one to answer specific details, but for the most part, a GAF Muster shoot is set up as a two-gun (NCOWS "Working Cowboy" Category - one pistol, one rifle) match.  Most stages involve reloads on the clock of either weapon, sometimes both.  If a stage calls for some other weapon, like a shotgun or single-shot, it is usually provided, along with ammo as a staged gun.  Shooters wear uniforms of their personna, whether Civil War,  Indian Wars, Span-Am War, or ANY Victorian-era military soldier ( British, Boer, Spanish, French Foreign Legion, Native American - Zulu? [nope - no assegais ]) .  You could be militia, scout or a partisan, if a lack of uniform is a problem.  GAF allows any military sidearm in our tiime period (approx. 1850-1900) including double-action pistols.  Match rifles are normally SASS or NCOWS lever actions (true, not totally military in most cases), but after the military "battle rifle" (Trapdoors, Krags, etc., depending on persona) demo at the last GAF Muster, a separate class for that is being considered, but I don't know if Chantilly is considering that for this upcoming one.

I hope I gave you the bare-bones basics.  If I am in error, anyone out there set both Haymaker and me straight.  I had a blast at the last Muster, and am glad we are having more of these "Regional" shoots.  I'm looking forward to being up in Topeka this spring, if my school schedule allows it.
