I have a friend with a pair of 1875 remingtons one an emf the other a uberti of some sort. Is there an easy way to lighten the hammer spring ? Is it like a 1873 clone just add a washer?

The spring slips into a slot in the frame so you can't just add a spacer. You'll need to take some off the sides of the spring. When you finish, make sure you don't have any sand or grind marks going across the spring or it can cause it to fail. Make your finishing polish ing lengthwise on the spring. Here's a photo of one of mine that I took quite a bit off. They work great, but don't try to take it all off at once. Do some then try it. I worked mine down until they were questionable, then stiffened them some with the tension screw in the grip frame. I left the ends the original width so they would fit the pistol the same and not drift off-center.

Thanks Marshal Will
I printed your reply and your picture , I will see him this weekend. He really likes his remmies but they are very hard to cock.
If he wasnt a rock mason he probably would have given up by now.

If you're going to shoot them C&B, don't take off as much as I did. Mine work great with cartridges but won't reliably fire percussion caps. It's probably a good idea to test the spring with caps to make sure it works right. On my cousin's pistols, I only took off about half as much so he could shoot C&B.

If your shooting cap and ball .. something i did to releive the hammer spring with out fear of doing damage to the spring. after cleaning my Remmies i left them in full cock when i hung them ( empty of course ) in the gun safe . after a month or so , the hammer springs felt much better .Just a little premature ageing .
