I found the following while looking for obits of ancestors. I thought it might be of interest to some.

"Buckskin Charlie Dies at Burlington
Burlington, Wis., Jan. 9- UPI-- Charles F. Ball, 81, better known as "Buckskin Charlie," a scout on the western frontier during the Civil war and an acquaintance of Buffalo Bill, died at his home here Wednesday morning. Mr. Ball was a former sheriff of Racine county and had held deputy sheriff offices until old age forced his retirement a few years ago. The Ball family moved here from Vermont in 1848. Mr. Ball is survived by three sons and a daughter." From the January 9, 1929 Stevens Point Daily Journal, Stevens Point, WI.
