OK,

Mr. Mexican War reenactor.....do you know where I can find any writings about the Marines in the Mexican American War?  Finding the general timelines and such are easy enough, but I was looking for some personal accounts, Marine Battalion history etc....

If you are not Books O'Tool and can answer, that would be appreciated too.

My intiial search has not been fruitful for Marine specific Mex-war memiors or histories.

I will try again at home.

The best single volume history of the war is The Mexican War by K. Jack Bauer.

There is a long out of print book called "Surf Boats and Horse Marines" that may be of interest.  I haven't read it since about 1975 so don't remember much about it.

The Marine Corps Historical Branch published a monologue on the Marines in the Mexican War.  I have a copy at home that if I can put my hands on it (it may still be packed up from our recent replumbing job), I'll see what I can find in the bibliography for youl.

I believe they fought mostly under Army General Wool, so you might look for anything on him as well.

Other sources are the general histories of the Marine Corps, or on the Mexican War, though they are seldom very detailed.

I've been researching Marines in the invasion and occupation of California during the Mexican War (for an Originals biography).  I've found it gets little mention in most of the most Mexican War histories - only in those that specialize in the California campaign do I find much - and then only a few paragraphs.  However, I like the out of the way campaigns and little known units as it is easier to place my persona among them since so little is known about them.

Surfboats and Horse Marines is also by K. Jack Bauer.  It is out of print and a bit pricey.  But a nice copy is probably worth $ 50.00.

Try to find it at the library first.  Then if you want to own a copy we will track it down for you.
