That's a mite bigger than a 20lber. .
could be a 7.5 or an 8.5 inch Parrott or Blakely on a Naval pivot carriage, hence the Navy crew.

Could be, you know a bit more about those than I do, I enlarged it and it does look a mite bigger.  The one out to Fort Kearny is a 20 pounder and I was almost sure that is what they said they fire in it.  So I was guessing based on that.

Report on the colored smoke rounds. Loaded some 20 ga square loads and added 1/4 teaspoon of red chalk to each load.  Lots of white smoke. Not even pink. Must take a lot more chalk than I'm interested in putting in the shot charge.

Yes it does take from the shot colum.............I cut my fiber wad down and place 1oz dipper full above the wad a wax paper card and the fill with shot.

Shot the disappointing loads Saturday, 2 Sept. I could not see the red in the smoke but the spectators could. Enough color that a spectator spent a good deal of time trying to get the smoke on camera. If I double the chalk I dont' think it will effect the shot column that much. Going to try it. Tried to restrain myself from yelling Ya-Hoo after each stage. Didn't work! I was yelling and hollering because this black stuff is a ball to shoot.

Good.  We need ta start thinkin' 'bout keepin' this good thing ta ourselves.

Whut I been thinkin' is replacin' the filler entirely with 'for'n' matter.  Powder, 1/8" card, let's say glitter in an equal volume to the grits I use, 'nother card wad, squirt ah Crisco, shot, crimp......

Need ta find ah wholesale vendor for glitter.  The stuff was too expensive it Michael's Arts 'n Crafts.

A little off topic but still has to do with colored smoke.
Many years ago (many, many years to be exact) my first expensive hobby was flying RC airplanes, for which all I could afford was a little two channel ARF job.  All the other guys in the club were mostly retired air force pilots with much more disposable income, and built elaborate 6-7 channel planes that could carry a small dog into the air, but the most inovative example was made by a retired pilot who had opened a hobby shop after his service.
He had mounted a bracket under each wing that held metal rods, which two small model rockets (A or AA size motors?), which he loaded with purple talc on top of the rocket motor in the tube along with the parachute.  The rocket motors have a small charge in the top which kicks out the chute and nose cone after the propellant burns up.  After 10 or 15 minutes in the air he'd aim his plane nose up and activate the rockets with an extra servo and battery pack built into the body and they'd shoot up followed by a purple clouds and parachutes.
Just thought I share this as I was reminded by this post of that experience.  Ya'll have fun.
