Hmm... yet another question, and a weird one.

Does anyone know of an addition to my normal load that would result in the smoke being purple? or red?

Second question along the same lines

Is there anything that I could use that would give a 'firework' effect? either a small burst or 'tracer' flame?

Well, the chemicals could be found in a one of those educational chemistry sets I think, but adding say, copper chloride (thought it was something like that) to get green would  not be very good on the bore, plus working with other metal and chemical compounds can be fatal, such as cobalt (cobalt blue).

Tracers accelerate the wear on guns and can be very dangerous, and would likely bounce off steel targets while still burning, setting fire to the range and possibly other people.

Perhaps using a normal charge of 3/4F black powder, then adding a grain or two of very course 1F or cannon powder with a wad over that for retention and no bullet will give you a tracer like effect, but during low light conditions at dusk or night time, black powder can really be seen with all the flame and flash.

I just don't think adding things to gunpowder of any kind would be at all safe and just have to warn against it.

I don't know about the smoke and flame but I have seen several BP loaded shotguns throwing tinsel, glitter and feathers mixed in the shot charge.

Hmm... i have thought about putting metals in with the powder, but, what little i remember of High School chemistry screams "NO" in my brain. I have a nice tin of Powdered Aluminum, which would make a nice Silver, but, I would have to work out a way of igniting it OUTSIDE of the barrel.

I have toyed with the idea of making a cartridge that has 2F BP, thin card wad with a small hole in the center, cotton ball, another thin card wad with hold, coloring agent/1F BP mix, and then wad and bullet.
My thoughts are that the BP would start to propel the whole mess down the barrel, it would also shoot a flame though the hole in the card, start to ignite the cotton wad (delaying the ignition of the coloring agent).

I just found nice website with all the metals and colours.
Strontium Carbonate --> Red
Standard salt (NaCl) -->nice yellow light.
Copper Chloride --> Blue... etc

Hmm.... This is all experimentation for the rapidly nearing Halloween shoot.

You can get a powder that dyes concrete here in New Zealand.

One CAS shooter here uses it in his BP loads.

Just a teaspoon full on top of his powder when loading.

There are various colours but he has found that the red works best.

Very impressive.

So my advice would be to check out the suppliers of concrete powder and ask them for the dye.

I was going to suggest the powdered colered chalk used for chalk lines.

But maybe you'd rather just shove a rubber chicken down the bore?

Russian Cosmonauts prove the rumour that chickens can fly. It has been confirmed that there is a 'Rubber Chicken (tm)' in low orbit above somewhere called Founders Ranch.

2 questions on this.

1- How much compression do you have to put the chicken under?
2- Whats the burn rate of the chicken?

Thanks for the ideas... just raided my 20 month olds supply of chalk and loaded up a cylinder with 'Red-White-Blue-White-Red'
Works excellent, and doubles the amount of smoke output... grin

Especially good on those days where the smoke just seems to hang in the air.

As to the chicken question. I am intrigued.

Should I broil , roast or fry the said beast?

Is there any way of determining the BC of a rubber chicken?

How would the afore mentioned fowl qualify with respect to the type of shot used. #4 or #9. or would it be regarded as a solid and therefore be illegal under most CAS shooting rules and requlations.

Finally is there enough momentum using a rubber chicken to drop a standard (if there is such a thing) popper?

I want to know.

The inquisition starts here.

Only question I got is where does one procure rubber chicken feathers?

Are the feathers important?

Do they react in a similar way to the fletchings on an arrow, thereby improving the accuracy of the chicken?

Does the chicken need to be totally covered or will the tail feathers be enough?

What weight feathers should I use (in grains please)

Would a rubber duck be as accurate?

JJ., I got a real laugh about the orbiting rubber chicken, too funny! :D

As for burning metal along with gun-powder, here's a reason not to;

"arsenic is produced worldwide, with most of it is obtained as a by-product of the smelting of copper, lead, cobalt, and gold ores."

Hey... its the only way that full BP loads are gonna be classed as 'gamer loads'. Just make sure that the cloud of smoke drifts towards the best shooters.

I know of a few places in San Francisco or San Jose that may be able to get some rubber chicken feathers. There are stores full of .......
ok... this is getting a little far away from the 'Black Powder' theme here....

Grapeshot

I never found anything that would actually burn when loaded ontop of a BP charge.  I've tried cotton balls, dryer lint and cat hair as wadding betweed powder and shot and none of those burst into flame outside the barrel.  A bit singed maybe, but no burning debris.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
