___?___ saw they were planning to kill him.  He didn't let on.  He went right on
branding, and watching.  Out to one side Pancho was tending the branding irons.  One Mexican was working with ___?___, three sat on the fence.  ___?___always wore his six-shooter, according to Pablo's version; therefore the men, who had too often seen the results of ___?___'s aim, were not anxious to start anything.

One of the three men on the fence wore a gun, too, and he was the one ___?___ watched the closest.  But it was the one helping with the branding who started the argument, and then tried to put up a fight.  ___?___ saw his first move, and brained him with the branding iron.  In a flash the armed Mexican jumped into the pen, his hand on his gun.  ___?___ drew and shot  him before he could draw the gun, then whirled and killed the two on the fence.

Up in Galeyville, Curly Bill Brocius took a bullet in the cheek from drifter ___?___, a veteran of the Lincoln County Wars.  ___?___ had approached the visiting Billy Breakenridge and tried to pick a fight.  Curley Bill stepped in and made ___?___ apologize to the deputy.  This, of course, did not sit well with ___?___, who continued to joust verbally with Curly Bill, then shot him as the cowboy was mounting his horse.  Breakenridge reported, "The bullet hit him in the cheek and knocked out a tooth coming through his neck without cutting an artery."  James Hancock, who also claimed to be present, later said that "every one thought that Bill was dead, and he could not talk anyway as the bullet had partly paralyzed the vocal cords in his throat."

Close, but no cigar, Del.  Funny you should mention Grounds.  Not a lot of folks are familiar with him.  He was born and raised just across the Pedernales River from our place, just west of Johnson City, TX, but his real last name was "Burtcher".  Got in some kind of "difficulty" with the law and headed west, stayed a while in Shakespeare, NM, and then on into Arizona, where he rode with Curly Bill's bunch.  Ended up getting blasted with a load of buckshot by Billy Breakenridge.

Wasn't it William Milton Breakenridge that shot Curly, assuming Wyatt didn't get him.

In this particular incident, Breakenridge was merely a witness to the shooting of Curly Bill, who eventually recovered from his wound (but with fewer teeth than before the incident).  Are you referring to a subsequent event?

I found this description of the incident.

Curiously, there is still the claim by some that Curly Bill Brocius retired from his wicked ways after being shot in the mouth by lawman William Milton Breakenridge. Breakenridge was a tough lawman and a close friend of Sheriff John Behan, becoming the deputy sheriff of Tombstone under Behan. He entered a saloon in Galeyville, Arizona, on 25 May 1881, and was immediately confronted by two of the toughest outlaws in the area, Brocius and his pal Jim Wallace. Wallace, a hardcase gunman who had seen the likes of the Lincoln County war in New Mexico, immediately picked a fight, but Breakenridge ignored him. The lawman invited everyone to join him in a drink. This display of courage infatuated Brocius.
When the lawman was ready to leave, Curly Bill, by this time stinking drunk, decided he would pick a fight with the lawman. He rode out of town on the heels of Breakenridge, tossing insults at the lawman's back. Breakenridge finally had enough of his antagonist. He turned and fired one shot which struck Curly Bill in the neck, the bullet emerging out his right cheek, knocking out a tooth. When Curly Bill finally recovered from his terrible wound, he is supposed to have hung up his guns and settled in Texas, living quietly for the remainder of his life under the name of William Graham. Wyatt Earp and his posse, of course, dispute this.

Not sure if it is accurate, as this contradicts Wyatt's claim he shot Curly Bill

Russ T,

I think your source is O'Neal's Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters.  My source was And Die in the West, by Paula Mitchell Marks.  Her next paragraph (following the one I posted) reads:

A number of Curly Bill's friends disarmed and arrested Wallace.  They were holding him in a corral when Breakenridge came to claim him.  The Arizona Weekly Star reported that the cowboys were threatening to lynch Wallace, but Breakenridge recalled that they turned him over easily.  He expalined to the group that armed men would not be welcome at the justice of the peace's when the case was considered and got a reply both nonchalant and chilling-- "that they did not care to go down, for if urly died they would hunt Wallace up, and if Curly lived he could hunt himj up himself."  The Weekly Star, commenting on the shooting, editorialized, "A great many people in southeastern Arizona will regret that the termination was not fatal to one or both of the participants."

Which one is correct?  This is the kind of stuff that makes this passtime interesting.

This one is a "twofer" - need a name for ___?___ and also a name for ___#___.

1864, Laredo, Texas.  Assigned to Colonel Rip Ford's regiment, ___?___ found border duty tedious, and when off-duty he opened a monte game.  One night, he and his brother___#___, also a member of Ford's troops, played against a group of Mexican soldiers, who proceeded to lose their pay and sidearms to the gringos.  By 2:00 A.M., the Mexicans were growing restive, and ___?___ whispered to his brother to go and arm himself.
Lieutenant Martino Gonzales soon appeared, declared the game closed, and demanded that ___?___ return the guns.  ___?___ refused, whereupon Gonzales went for his gun, and a player named Miguel Zertuche jammed his pistol against ___?___ 's chest and pulled the trigger.  The gun misfired, and ___?___ shot Zertuche in the head, then whirled and pumped a slug into Gonzales' chest.  ___?___ darted out the door and dove into a pool outside.  When he emerged, he encountered ___#___; the two brothers split up and escaped the angry Mexicans in the darkness.

"...When the distance had been chopped to 150 yards, Cook opened up with the .45-90 and held them off.

"___?___ and his possemen heard the firing from a long distance,  and knowing full well that the outlaws had been cornered, turned and galloped toward the sound of the shooting.  ___?___, an old hand at border skirmishing, came in on the battle off the left flank.  He pulled the horses down at a couple of hundred yards, dropped to the ground, and commenced a bold advance without any heed for cover or the bullets which splashed the rocks about him.  Jake Combs who was at ___?___'s shoulder got an earlobe shot away.  Jubal Friar, one of the outlaws, rose up behind a rock and triggered off two quick shots at the advancing ___?___.  Thalis Cook shot him in the head with the big Winchester.

"The pair of outlaws ran up the mountain, attempting to reach their hobbled horses.  Ease Bixler got to a horse, cut the hobbles, and bareback rode out of the fight.  Art Friar, brother of the man just killed by Cook, threw up his hands.  "I quit," he yelled, "don't shoot no more."

"___?___ and Cook closed in on him.  When he did not put up his hands at the command, the lawmen separated and moved in at a trot.  When at a distance of thirty feet, Art Friar suddenly whipped his hand around behind his back and drew a six-shooter he had rammed into the pants belt.  Both ___?___ and Cook fired and both hit him.  He was killed instantly.  The third rustler was picked up two days later trying to steal a saddle.

"The dead outlaws were roped on their own horses and hauled out to Alpine.  The arrest warrant, issued by Judge Van Sickle of Alpine, had somehow gotten saturated with blood.  It was returned to the good judge in that condition.  Mute evidence that it had been served."
