BB,  'fraid the Mastersons let you down.

Something extra:   "Cockeyed Frank" Loving, so called because of "one of his optics bearing in a northeast direction to the other"

1883, Leona River near Leakey, Texas.  While acting as sheriff of Uvalde County, ___?___ trailed Jim and Tom Hannehan, suspected of robbing a stage, to their ranch on the Leona River.  At the ranch ___?___ approached them and placed them under arrest.  The brothers moved to resist, but ___?___ shot Tom dead.  Jim then surrendered and gave up the loot.  (It should be noted that after ___?___'s death the next year, Mrs. Hannehan would come to the cemetery in Uvalde on each anniversary of her son's death and, setting a brush fire atop ___?___'s grave, would "dance with devilish glee" around the mound.)

July 7, 1879, Caldwell, Kansas.  On Monday afternoon two cowboys from the Cherokee Strip, George Wood and Jake Adams, galloped into Caldwell and, after an hour of heavy drinking in the Occidental Saloon, weaved into the street and began firing their six-guns.  Constable W.C. Kelly and Deputy John Wilson, accompanied by a posse which included ___?___ and W.H. Kiser, cautiously entered the Occidental.

Wood and Adams immediately leveled their guns at the lawmen, ordered them to keep their hands at their sides, and began to move toward the door.  ___?___ boldly stepped in front of the door, whereupon the two cowboys pointed their weapons at him and demanded his revolvers.  "I'll die first," growled ___?___.  One of the cowboys decided to accommodate him, but his shot whizzed by ___?___'s head and grazed the temple of Kizer, who stood behind ___?___.

___?___ instantly went for his pistols.  As Wood darted for the door, ___?___ fired two shots; one slug went wild, but the other clipped off the end of  Wood's forefinger, tore away the trigger of his gun, ripped through both his lungs, and came out under his right shoulder blade.  The impact of the bullet rolled Wood into the street, and he died immediately.

Almost simultaneously ___?___ squeezed off a shot from his other gun.  Adams was struck in the right side, and the slug tore all the way through his body.  He fired back at ___?___, but the bullet grazed John Wilson's wrist.  Wilson pumped two slugs into Adams, who was hit in the right hand and stomach.  As he went down, Adams shot Wilson the leg, then breathed his last on the saloon floor.

___?___ and gambler Charles Storms had an argument over a card game in Tombstone's Oriental Saloon, where ___?___ was a house dealer.  Bat Masterson (Here he is, BB), another house dealer, intervened and restrained the two men, but ___?___ belligerently returned later in the day.  After a bitter flurry of words the two gamblers went for their pistols.  Aggressively, ___?___ charged Storms, firing three times.  One slug broke Storm's neck, and a second tore into his heart.  He slumped to the floor, dead, and ___?___ later was cleared of all charges.

Does it give a reason why Miller did this?

Capt.,
Does it give a reason why Miller did this?

Slim

Possibly because:

On April 12, 1894, Sheriff Bud Frazer, who had recently arrested Marshal Miller as a mule thief, and perhaps fearing Miller's vengeance, took a pot shot at Killin' Jim without warning.  Struck in the right arm, Miller pulled his gun with his left hand and began shooting.  Miller managed to hit only bystander Joe Krans in the hip, then went down as Fraizer emptied his sixgun into Jim's chest.  But the bullets had struck a steel plate Miller often wore for protection, and Jim soon recovered from the fight.  Then, on December 26, 1894, standing in front of a Pecos Blacksmith shop, Miller was suddenly fired upon by Bud Fraizer.  Miller was hit in the right arm and left leg, but he stood his ground and began operating his six-gun with his left hand.  Two more bullets glanced off Miller's breastplate, and the demoralized former sheriff turned and ran. (also excerpted from Bill O'Neal's Encyclopedia fo Western Gunfighters.)

I think Bud had a death wish.

Didn't old Jim Miller eventually become a "dangling" participle?
