Okay............ ::)

Whats yer preefered method fer preparing ya stock `n the like fer refinishing,

In the past I have removed the furniture from the smokepole, Sponged the wood with warm soapy water rubbed dry then wiped the wood with white spirit, and then proceeded ta remove the previous finish, iffn it wuz lacquer I would use a very fine steel wool dabbed in varnish remover wiping clean regularly with a damp cloth until it wuz what I felt  ready enuf fer finishing!!

Soooooooo............

Whats your method??

`Cos I`m sure some of you pards have gotta better way!!!

Probably not available in the U.K. but here's the best IMHO:

use the dishwasher. Put your wood right in there on the rack, put in your regular dishwasher soap, and run it through the heavy pots/pans cycle. Use the heated drying cycle as well. Your stocks will come out ready for a new finish, and the steam in there will also remove any small dents/dings.  8)

No dishwasher will remove a urethane finish found on modern guns. Take the wood to a professional refinisher & let them use the harsh chemicals. Note: if the stock is an oil finish with years of linseed oil and/or petroleum distillates embedded you'll need to use "whiting" and that will take time and several applications. Better yet, go find a retired stockmaker from say Purdey's and let him do it.  ;)

I have done just about every gun I own and the process is remarkably simple.

1 - Remove the stock and any metal parts
2 - But some CitraStrip at your local hardware dealer, along with some rubber gloves, a cheap 1 inch paint brush and a plastic
     stripping brush
3 - Lay some tin foil out on the bench
4 - Liberally coat the stock with the Citrastrip
5 - Wait about 30 minutes, heavily coat again then wrap foil around parts an leave over night (The foil keeps the CitraStrip from
    drying out over night)
6 - Brush and scrape the finish off in the morning
7 - Scrub with mineral spirits and a green scrubbee  (Cleans off the excess stripper)
8 - Let dry overnight
9 - Finish with the finish of your choice (I use a mixture of 1 part linseed oil, 1 part spar varnish and 1 part mineral spirits - multiple
    coats...but thats me.)

The citraStrip smells good and works like MAGIC - it's fairly safe if you wear rubber gloves and don't drink it...the old finish is literally peeling off in the morning...most stripping brushes come with a plastic putty knife built into the handle...you might need that on one or two spots but not too many.

If the gun has an old linseed oil finish, start with this method and finish with brake cleaner...the brake cleaner will dissolve the old oil and dry completely away.  You can also use the brake cleaner to clean up the mineral spirits described above so you can put the finish on in the same day.

Here is the link to their website...it will tell you more than I could...you might even print out the specs and bring it to a local hardware store - they might be able to hook you up with a similar product.

I like it because it has no harsh fumes and it works!  I have had a half gallon jug of the gel for a couple years...it only takes a half cup or so to do a rifle...

I just used the CitriStrip and wasn't impressed at the fact that it dried out overnite and had to be re-done.  Thanks, Little Al, for the tip about wrapping it in aluminum! (tinfoil  ::) )  I'll bet that it will only require one time, then - 'cause I noticed that it seemed to be doing just great - until I went back to it the next morning after it dried!

By the way, Al mentioned, and the instructions say - to use a metal can.  I used a mixed-drink glass that worked fine.  My point?  DON'T   USE anything made of plastic!  I wiped with a rag and then inadvertently got it against a loose-leaf notebook cover.  It tried to eat the rubbery plastic!

READ the directions:  I like this stuff WAY better than ZipStrip.  Zip Strip tried to eat my HANDS!  (But Z.S. is faster and more aggressive.)

I'm not sure how this will help you, Paladin ...  ::)  :(

I notice it says (near the bottom of the label)

"Strips Up To 15 Layers"

I'll bet it IS powerful - like my Olde Stuffe Zip Strip.  Heavy duty stripping power!  ;)
