My daughter is looking for home remedies that folks would have used in frontier /pioneer days.  You know, the "potato against the fevered part and then bury it by moonlight" sort of thing.

What did people do if there weren't any doctors around and no one with real medical knowledge?

I appreciate any help.

I'll, dig, the Foxfire books has a bunch in one or more of the volumes.

One I do know right off hand is from the natives, the root of the purple cone flower was made into tonics to resist colds and other sickness.

The yuppie herb folks act like they discovered it, course they got to use the taxinonical name cause purple cone flower sounds to.....well you know.  They call it Echinachia (sp) ;D

Fourty,  I used to work with a fellar,  that had got a book from his mother that had got it from who knows where,  it was just full of the kind of things yer looking for,  I tried to find a newer version once at the book store,  nobdy could find anything about that particular book.

I don't remember the name, but it was leather covered and about 2 inches wide and looked to be well over a hundred years old then.

and it also had all  the old uses of every plant.
