I was wondering if one could use BP cartridge or a sub in the Taurus Gaucho .45LC?

Why, yes, I dress like this all the time. I feel very unencumbered like this, and it helps to conceal my pistols...

*heh* both, I suppose, Arcey.
I have a fascination with Black Powder, and I can't seem to shake it. I know that I can't with my Ruger NVaq's, but I have a Taurus Gaucho what was given to me by a friend, and I'd like to be able to use it with BP, but I also don't wish to blow my durn hand off, either.

I got the same fascination............

Ya can.  Anything that'll handle smokeless pressures will handle black.  Functioning will depend on how tight the thing is.  One way to find out.  Load up some and try it.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone usin' the Taurus with the One True Powder.  If ya try it, please let us know what ya got.

Alright, I shall - Question, though, I've heard about tolerances being too tight - what is the effect of that? what does it mean?
I'll purchase some of the Holy Black cartridges and test them out.

The most likely problem with a revolver will be with the cylinder gap.  The fouling may build up there and lock the thing up.

I shoot Ubertis.  All of them are loose 'n they'll go all day.  I have one old Ruger that will and one rebuilt Ruger (rebuilt by Ruger) that won't go thru five rounds before it locks up.

I have had no problems with my stock Rugers going through all six stages without any lockups.  Occasionally I would squirt some Moosemilk in there as a preventative measure but not always....didn't yesterday.  They worked fine.  Every gun is different.  Some work fine out of the box and some require a little widening of the cylinder gap to shoot the one true powder.

The NRVs will handle bp just fine.  But any Ruger, except ROAs, may have too tight a barrel/cylinder gap.  If that's the case, it's easily opened up and then they do just fine.  I had a pair of 357s that were too tight between the cylinder and the barrel and after the gap was opened up, they handled bp just fine.  Same with one 44 Magnum.  All my others run bp without a problem.

I'd give the NRVs a go and see if they bind up.  If they do, I'd widen the gap and enjoy the guns with bp.

SS, I like the others shoot Rooooger's. However I have shot the same pistol ammo from my wifes Taurus Thunderbolt.  It did not blow up or a part. If that helps ease yer mine.

Gentlemen, I must express my deepest thanks to all of you.
I certainly appreciate all the help you are willing to put forth to me, a newcomer to this, and, in a sense, to firearms in general.
I'd be very lost without all of you. ;)

Sundown,

We all had to start somewhere, and this forum is a wealth of information.  I am always learning new things.

A helpful hint to keep any Colt/ Ruger/ or Remington revolver running on black is the lube you use on the cylinder pin.  This is an old NMLRA revolver shooters trick.  Lube the pin and the hole with a thick coat of Lubriplate or other bearing/axel grease.  Install the pin and wipe away the excess, but not too thoroughly, especially below the barrel / cylinder gap.  It has high heat resistance and doesn't melt away the way BP lubes do.  It prevents fouling from entering the cylinder pin hole.  You may need to wipe the cylinder face with a Balistol dampened cloth once in awhile.

Have a pair of TG's in .357 ss 4 5/8.  They would do 12 rnds of "real BP" & bind up.  (out of the box)  Opened up the gap a little, took a little off the back of the cylinder (where the teeth are) to give it a very little front/back movement.  Now will go 75 rnds with the PRS boolit-16.5 gr 3f.  So the answer is YES- after ya do a little "open'n" to them.  Right out of the box  mine were WAY too tight, BUT SMOOTH as glass.

I just had the opportunity to take my 5 1/2 Gauchos out and feed them some BP loads.
Winchester Case, WSM primers, 23gr Goex FFFg, card wad, grits, lube pill, wax paper wad, 250gr SWC Meister Bullet (with blue smokeless lube in channels)

Started out with clean pistols, cylinder pin sprayed with Ballistol.

Pistol 1 ==> first 20 rounds went through without a problem. I checked the cylinder pin, chambers and bore after each 5. After the 20th round, I sprayed the pin with Ballistol, sprayed Ballistol down bore and boresnaked it.
16 more rounds without a prob, then the cylinder stared getting sticky, but lasted through 20.
Pistol 2 ==> Same as above for first 20 rounds, AND second 20.

Gauchos are fantastically made, smooth and tight. I found that the Ballistol helps incredibly on my Remmies to stop them binding, seems like it worked on the Gauchos too. My recommendation would be to wipe off then squirt some Ballistol on the cylinder pin after each 10 rounds (2 stages) and wipe off the face of the cylinder too. After every 20, boresnake.

Hope this helps.
